Default Boys names

Hi I'm getting two roborovoski hamsters tomorrow. I just wondered if any suggestions on names. . One is white the other is the usual colour. They are about 6 months old so any settling in tips would be great. Thanks.

Have you got the cage all set up and sorted? Just asking because if you're getting a pair, cage set up is really important to try and avoid them falling out, fighting and having to be separated (which is very common).

So no levels. At least 2 houses and wheels, two water bottles and food bowls. And houses need to have more than one entrance. Even any tubes or tunnels inside the cage need to have a big enough diameter that they could both sit inside the entrance comfortable or one would claim it as territory. Likewise with levels one can claim it as territorial. The aim is to prevent them becoming territorial. And likewise it's best not to take one out of the cage without the other as even in a short space of time the one in the cage can become territorial.

If you don't have a house with two or more entrances you can easily make them out of a tissue box and cut holes for doors - or a shoebox.

They also like lots of hidey places so they feel protected from above - so large tunnels, egg boxes, other hides etc so not too much open floor space. It helps if one of the two wheels is big enough for both to run in together comfortably. eg an 8" wheel or even bigger. Open wheels are better than ones with holes if they want to get in together.

Although they may share a wheel, house etc, they need the option to have separate ones.

Also what size is the cage? If it's too small they can fall out (and likewise if it's very large). An 80cm cage would be a good size for a pair plus the extra houses and wheels etc.

Make sure there is plenty of substrate - 4 to 6" and plenty of torn up strips of plain white toilet paper for building a nest (don't use any fluffy bedding). Settling in. Usually best to leave them alone for 2 to 3 days and then gradually start hand taming offering a treat through bars or on your hand. It's also usually recommended not to change anything in the cage or clean anything for the first two weeks. If you have a sand bath in it they may use it as a litter tray which will help. Then ongoing - spot cleaning mostly and not doing big cage cleans too often. Pet shops usually say once a week but it's not necessary if you have enough substrate and spot clean. Also cleaning everything at the same time isn't good as it removes all their familiar scent and stresses them. So you could do the substrate one time, but leave the wheel till another week and the toys another week again. I can easily go a few months without a full cage clean with our robo.

Names - a pair of names might be nice Maybe think of something you like and think of a pair from that. eg Harry and Ron (Harry Potter)

Sorry I forgot to say that they are already split. They come with 2 cages but I suspect these will be too small. I have a zoozone 2 and a 21/2 foot cage with levels. It is homemade and made of perplex. I did wonder about the fluff they are coming with. I will make sure there is torn up toilet roll to replace it. Should I keep them in the same cages for the first night seeing as they have been transported from one place to another or is it ok to swap also should I keep their fluff for the first night and change it the next. I will need to put them in 2 Carrier's to travel anyway. I believe they come with spinning saucer wheels so I can use them in their new homes. Thanks for the idea about houses I may need to make make some as I don't have any. I have bowls and chinchilla dust so I can put a sandbowl in each. That's a good idea about the names I'll have a think tonight.

I'd double check whether you have chinchilla dust or sand - dust could bad for their breathing.

As for names, I decided on a musical theme - so for two boys they would have been Jean valjean and javert (from Les miserables). I ended up with a girl Syrian, so she ended up being Elphaba )from wicked)

Sounds like they're going to a great home though, with all the thought you're putting into this!

Thankyou. Your right it's chinchilla sand. Your names are brilliant. It certainly will give me a wide choice. I'm still thinking on them but hopefully I'll will find a fit when I see them. Is it unusual to get white roborvoski hamsters as I've not seen any that colour before.(providing he is white as it was on a photo. It looked it like it to me though.

That's much easier if they're already separated I would put them straight into the new cages you have, without the fluff and give them 2 or3 days to settle in and build a nest out of the paper, and no cleaning or moving things around for a couple of weeks till they;re fully settled. Yes they'll be having a change but best they go straight into the new cages you have - they will settle better than having another change later.

Is one bigger than the other? If so how about David and Goliath? A theme is a good idea - films, books, comics.

I went through loads of lists online when choosing ours and made a shortlist but ultimately it ends up being my Stepson's choice (although I slightly over-ruled on the last choice!)

Thanks for the advice. I will put them in their new houses tonight when I get back. A list sounds like a good idea. I'm fine with girls names (I've had girl gerbils, hamsters and guinea pigs over the years.
It's helpful having the choice David and goliath will definelty be on the list and my son can pick his favourite if he can't think of any. Thankyou. I'm looking forward to picking them up tonight. I have set up the cages for when I get back so they can go straight in.

That's great. We still can't settle on 2 names we like so this list will be helpful. It was lovely watching them yesterday. They came with lots of fluff for bedding and just a covering of carefresh on the bottom of the cage. I thought they wouldn't be able to burrow because of that but in no time at all they were disappearing under the carefresh in their new homes. I put the houses they were given into their new homes but this morning they had disappeared under the carefresh. So they may sleep underground like Rosie and Daisy did.
