Glad to hear his vets trip went well! I hope he doesnt develop any complications from the lumps or metacam and that he continues to be comfortable!

I love how you set up the hemp mats over the fitch, I’ll have to keep that in mind for the future! What hemp did you use/how did you cut it so neatly? I always end up tearing it because it wont cut properly but maybe my scissors are just blunt lol

I quite agree the hemp mats can be very hard to cut. On this occasion I got the Rodipet large ones instead of the Hugro ones. It;s sold as a liner for their tank style cage. It is much thinner and easier to cut! Had used it once before and thought it would work much better for this job.

I honestly didn't know what to do about his cage. Hemp mat just on the cage base would have seemed a bit "unenriched" and hard and bleak maybe. So I just decided to put it on the substrate. OH was concerned Nugget may go under the matting and get trapped but I'm not worried about that - there is the odd little gap and corner here and there so if he did decide to tunnel under it I know he could get out. He can still tunnel!

As it happens he hasn't attempted to and seems happy with the easy surface. The mat surfaces seems more interesting because it has slightly different levels under it where the substrate slopes and must feel softer with more give.

I am a big fan of hemp mat at the moment! Also it's great for cutting small pieces to sit on top of the larger pieces to make a soft "step".

Nugget loves his hammock thing as well - although uses it more as a tunnel but I can tell by the look on his face that he likes it.

Nugget is doing very well in the same room as Newt - it's a bit less hectic in there. And he LOVES his double layer hammock. He's settled down since the vet visit and was out at lunch time have a little mosey around, a chew of his log. Got on his saucer and it didn't spin - I think he was showing me it was stuck - there was a bit of food under it wedging it so removed that and showed him it worked - he then ignored me, and went to sit in his hammock grooming for ages. He seems quite content.

That is good news about Nugget. That double hammock will be nice and soft for him and a good covered area for grooming. Warm too which will be good. Had to laugh at him pointing out the problem with his saucer but when you fixed it, he then ignores you!

A double layered hammock sounds so snug and cosy. I would love a human sized one. Pleased to hear he's enjoying living in the same room as Newt.

Nugget had some out of cage time again the other day. He has sometimes shown signs of wanting to come out but of course runs away. The other day he was chewing at the bars a bit so I put his snooze cube in the cage. He likes it and walked into and I lifted him out that way, so he had a bit of time in the playpen. He is just the same but looks really ropey with his bald patches and lump hanging down. I think he enjoyed being out of the cage though. He still eats well too.

Nugget sounds as though he is doing his own thing in a quiet way. The snoozecube is such a good way to get him out of the cage. Good that he still hamsters around ok even if he does not look his handsome best anymore.
