Nugget isn't able to use his wheel any more - very difficult to know what to do. He still uses his saucer - I think the angle of running is easier. He clearly enjoys doing what he is doing - loves food and his hammock - but it is a bit sad when he can't use his wheel. I am wondering how long to leave him but he's enjoying other things too much to think about letting him go at the moment. Wondering if I should just take the wheel out and put something else there instead.

I think its a good idea to replace the wheel with something else. He's got the saucer so shouldn't be unhappy because he can't use the wheel anymore. How old is Nugget now?

I know you took Charlie's wheel out in the end Serendipity. What does Nugget try to do with his wheel if anything? Does it present a danger to him? Does he try to get into it and fail and so risk hurting himself? If not and he just ignores it, then perhaps leaving it for a bit won't be a problem if the change would upset or stress him. Otherwise, yes a substitute would do.

Thanks Ria and Coco. Actually I can't even remember if I took Charlie's wheel out! Nugget is about 22 months old now. Not mega old for a robo. But he has some kind of tumour or lump. He communicates with me by showing me things. So for example recently he sat on his saucer and gave me a particular look - I checked the saucer and it wasn't spinning because food was stuck underneath.

Last week he came out and got onto his wheel but didn't try to run and gave me the same look and then got off again. His lump seemed much bigger and I am guessing it rubs when when he runs on the wheel. And he did look a bit sad because he loved his wheel. The lump is quite mobile and hangs down in loose skin, so I suspect with the angle of the saucer it stays out of the way more.

I do have other toys he'd enjoy, just not sure if it would upset him if I took it out. Had a chat with OH about whether it was time to think about letting him go and OH said not because he does still enjoy his food and gets out and about.

Hamsters soon let us know when we do something to upset them. The way Nugget communicates with you is fascinating. He was telling you that he can't manage his wheel now. You could try a different toy and see if he likes it. He's had this lump for a while now but do you think he's in pain? If not, i'd be inclined to agree with your OH.

He is on Metacam - a larger dose than originally after last vet visit. I don't think he is in pain generally as he still climbs in and out of the top hole of his house! But I suppose it must rub if he runs on the wheel (and it's nice soft cork wheel!) and maybe that causes discomfort. Or - that he just can't run because he trips over the lump - which is the main issue I think. I can imagine that is more of an issue running in a straight line than at an angle on the saucer - although he doesn't run as much on that any more.

Yes it is a special thing, his communication. He has never been properly tamed and although I can handle him now he doesn't want it and I am worried about hurting him. But we have always had conversations! From the start. He would sit and look at me and listen while I chatted. And he does clearly show you and get your attention with looks when he needs to tell you something.

I think all hamsters do - our Syrians have been the same - and it shows they do communicate and have brains!

Also we have to remember that an ageing hamster outranks us in years and maturity! And so when they show us there is a problem then we need to take notice. And when they show us they disapprove of a change and give you that look then you should feel suitably reprimanded!

I think you are more bothered by Nugget not being able to run on his wheel than Nugget himself!
I can imagine that hamsters adjust like humans do when health issues stops them from doing certain activities.

Yes, hamsters definitely communicate. You're lucky that Nugget looks at you while you chat to him. Henry often gives me the kiss my ass gesture by turning round and showing me his backside when i talk to him.

That is still communication ha ha! Sound very Syrian like as well! Yes you're probably right that I worry more than Nugget - but it must be a bit like having your car taken away - but then you still have a bike!

I'm sorry Nugget's still on the metacam, it's wonderful that he's communicating with you, he knows his mum and that you're keeping him informed of what you're doing to help him.
