Pleased that Nuggets is still doing well and is managing to cope with his age and health difficulties. It’s good that he is still enjoying is baby food with his Metacam and probiotics. I hope the cage modification are still making things easier for him.

Thank you SKB. Spoke too soon about Nugget settling after the cage move. Yesterday lunch-time I found him bar chewing. I put out a bit of the country hunter dog food and he stopped and came and gobbled it up and gave me looks! So that seemed to do the trick. I hadn't given him any for a couple of days, just his baby food at night with the Metacam in. Last night he hadn't eaten much of that so have put it in the dog food this lunch time instead. All gobbled up again!

I think he is trying to tell me - I want that dog food! Want to make sure he gets all his Metacam daily though so it won't do any harm.

I know. I do worry about him - he has lumps hanging down at both sides and is very careful stepping into his cheese cube. I am still thinking of changing his cage so he has everything level and just hemp mat as substrate.

So pleased Nugget got his dog food treat again. His lumps must be a concern though.

So tonight I have made some changes to Nugget's cage. I watched him climbing up his very shallow ramp to his house roof yesterday and he does struggle a bit on uneven surfaces. Also on the substrate. I keep pressing it down but it gets ruffled up again. It doesn't stop him he was sat in his food bowl pouching yesterday and uses his wheel.

I wasn't keen on removing all the substrate and putting hemp mat down, so have tried putting hemp mat on top of the substrate. Have also put his wheel back on it's stand (which is why it's so far from the back of the cage). This moves the wheel further forward and makes everything easier to get at in a smaller area.

I fiddled around with hemp mat for ages and cut out shapes to fit round his saucer, sand bath and food bowl, so they all have soft edges and it's easy to get in his wheel.

I left a corner open without hemp mat at the back behind the wheel as there was a huge hoard in that corner so if he wants to dig down a bit to get at his hoard, he can.

I took his cheese cube out because the bottom of the entrance holes is hard on his tummy and replaced it with an upturned sputnik for a shelter there. I've also added a hammock which should be nice and soft. It is at hemp mat level at one side and house roof level at the other side, but there is a gap underneath where his house entrance is so he has plenty of head room to get out if he turns right.

Not quite sure how it is going to work, so I'll have to keep an eye on things. He came to his house entrance a couple of times to see what was going on. A lot of changes but his house end is left alone apart from swapping the cheese cube for the sputnik.

Anyway hopefully he now has a nice level surface to get about on easier and can access everything easily.

The lumps mainly affect his mobility on uneven surfaces. Other than that he carries on doing everything as normal.

Comments and suggestions welcome!

This is his house roof end with the shelter (sputnik) and his medicine plate and veg plate. The main food bowl is sunk in the substrate as I cut a hole in the hemp mat for it.

And this is the enormous hoard that was in the back right corner. He has another big hoard in his house.

I have since added another piece of hemp mat just in front of the wheel so it sits a bit higher than the wheel, so he can get in without rubbing up against the edge of the wheel.

I could really do to take his house out and cut out the bottoms of the round hole doorways so the doorways are open underneath and nothing to catch on. I did that with Charlie's labyrinth house when he got older.

Not quite sure how/when I can achieve that as he is in there a lot and it would mean disturbing his nest and his little set up in there. Probably wait for him to get used to the rest of the cage first as he seems to be managing fine in the house.

Wow not seen hemp mat over bedding before. It certainly does look easier to get around - actually that’s one of the things that I wasn’t so keen on with fitch as for dwarfies as it often looked like they were hiking through rough terrain Would say something like megazorb is soft and can provide a very even surface as the pieces are smaller but obviously the dust levels are higher so it isn’t for everyone. Or a larger sand area but not sure whether that would be abrasive over time.
The hoard is enormous lol. Chochos is just as large honestly it’s so easy to overfeed them!
The setup is looking nice anyway hope he is able to get around better.

Thank you M&M. Yes hardly any food seems to go from his bowl and yet he has huge hoards! It was all clean and dry too. He has never peed on his hoards.

I got up in the night as was a bit worried how he’d cope with the changes and his baby food medicine had gone and he’d been on his wheel. He was also out this morning and gave me a couple of looks which I took as approval. Saw him run through the hammock from the house roof to the mat on the other side, round the corner and down the slope to his house.
