Thanks M&M It has been lowered already - along with a lower ramp. He was a bit stressed about that change along with his vet visit, and has just got used to it. I tend to raise the shelf to roof level (ie flush against the top bars) rather than removing them so it still gives the overhead cover. I'll gauge the timing. He gets up and down there easily at the moment but I do worry he might topple off the edge - his balance is better up there though because it's flat.

Next thing is to flatten the substrate so don't want to change too much all at once as he hates anything changing!

Yes he is doing all the normal things, running on his wheel and saucer without issue, moving around the cage fast - apart from having difficulty balancing on the loose substrate. He doesn't seem in pain - but I'll keep an eye on it and watching his movements etc.

I will try and measure out what 0.03ml actually is - probably 1 and a half drops lol which would be difficult to get exact. He definitely seems better for being on the Metacam though.

Serendipity, I'm glad to read Nugget is doing better on the Metacam.

Nugget is hamstering along as ever. He does go up on the shelf quite a bit and tonight I saw him sitting up there and having a wash. It has a hemp mat on it so maybe he likes that. So it seems to be a place to wash and poop. He walks well on the ramp and shelf, which are flat. So I'm going to leave it for now. He also runs on his wheel and saucer without any problem - also flat surfaces.

It's walking on substrate where he can't seem to keep his balance or walk very well - it's as if his lumps throw him off balance when he can't get a firm footing.

So trying to decide what to do about the substrate. I was going to compress it down, but as he digs and burrows near his "wheel house" a bit it all gets ruffled up and uneven again - Fitch is quite fluffy.

At one point I was thinking of having just hemp mat on the base for most of the cage and just leaving Fitch in one corner where his burrow is - just so he can run about easily - but don't think he would like that - and then the shelf would be too high even if lowered again.

Maybe reducing the substrate and compressing it will do.

Made a few changes in Nugget’s cage this evening. He stayed underground at first but then came out to check what I was doing. So a fair bit of spot cleaning and replacing some substrate, plus lower substrate and compressed it down. Of course then the shelf and ramp were too high/steep and won’t move down far enough. Propped the ramp up with a piece of cork and nugget ran up but kept looking like he was going to jump off the shelf. So in the end decided to remove it and it’s on top of the cage in the same position so he’s still “under” it. To keep things familiar I took the hemp mat off the shelf and put it on the house roof and used the same bendy ramp to the house roof as a bridge instead of a ramp.

So it’s a bit easier for him to get round the cage. He still has a bit of a ramp and shelf on the house roof. However pressing the Fitch down hasn’t helped much - it is still a bit soft and uneven for him to walk on without stumbling.

He looked a bit stunned afterwards but has worked out what’s what. He seems very active still - if a bit disabled.

Might have to think about a hemp mat floor at some point. But he’s had enough change for now. Plus could still really do to have a cage clean and not just spot clean although about half the substrate is changed.

Nugget may be a bit taken aback by more changes but they are needed if he is still so shaky on his paws. Maestro never tunnels in his fitch only walking in it impacted down over time. Mind you, at 200gms he is a lot heftier than Nugget. More like Newt!

Thank you Coco. He isn’t shaky on his paws exactly - it’s his centre of gravity affected by his tummy lumps so if the surface isn’t firm and level he can’t keep his balance.

Nugget has moved back into his labyrinth house now. So it worked cleaning half the cage at a time He was on his wheel and saucer early this morning and indicating to me that I have put the rainbow bridge in the wrong place so I'll tweak that later. I guess partly using them a lot due to the stress of the changes, but also maybe to show me how fit and agile he is - when mid air anyway - he kept jumping out of his wheel.

Oh bless him, Nugget still wanting to be in charge of furniture removals! Better do as you are told... and then he is jumping out of his wheel.
