Slight update. He looked fine today. Maybe he had just woken up yesterday. No sticky eye and face looking nice and normal - his fur is still a bit raggy and his skin looks very pink. The vet commented his skin looked pink.

I have really been needing to sort out his cage but been letting him settle a bit. So did just a very little bit of spot cleaning in his old house (the abandoned one) at one side of the cage. He still has a nest inthere with a hoard under it. It wasn't too bad so just spot cleaned the toilet compartment. He came out looking concerned and went straight in there and into his nest to see if his hoard was still there or if it had been stolen! So I got a good look at him then but haven't been able to see underneath.

Anyway as he looked ok today have given the antibiotic today. Probiotics haven't arrived yet - hopefully today. I am wondering why he is skin is such a dark pink colour.

He'll have had antibiotics for 9 days now and I'm wondering if 10 days is more than enough. I am not sure what 2 weeks worth is going to achieve - but will try and get a look at his underside if possible before deciding.

Nugget seems more relaxed and back to normal - he is getting used to the slight cage changes I had to make after his vet visit and yesterday had a little run over his rainbow bridge, and went up his shallow ramp to his lowered shelf - there is nothing on the shelf now because I moved his sand bath and food bowl down to the floor when he was struggling with climbing - but it does give access to the sputnik.

So he seems more his old self. He does still have lumps underneath but seems in less discomfort (maybe the Metacam). However he still doesn't find it easy walking on the substrate so at some point I need to press it down well so it's more of a level surface.

As he seems well I decided to continue the Baytril until the 2 week point the vet suggested and am starting probiotics as well. I doubt the lumps will disappear even after two weeks of Baytril, but we'll see.

Main thing is he is carrying on as normal and can't wait for his bit of dog food with Baytril every day and licks the plate clean. He also polishes off the bit of baby food with Metacam in during the evening when I put that out.

Really I want to remove the level now - I don't want to risk him toppling and falling. But don't want to change anything again just now as it seemed to really stress him last time (probably because just after the vet visit). But I know he hadn't been up on the shelf and hadn't been using his sand bath, and he now has great fun in the sand bath at floor level.

Good to know that Nugget is more like his old self. If the baytril makes no difference to the lumps, will you continue with the metacam to keep any pain under control? Sounds like that would not be a problem to give him, now that Nugget looks forward to the treat it is mixed with. Even if you stopped the metacam, you might have to continue with the treat or risk him pushing the empty dish around in disapproval!

Thanks Coco. Yes I'll continue with the Metacam if the lumps don't disappear. I have enough for a few months. They affect his walking a bit.

Serendipity, I am glad to read that little Nugget is doing better. Sounds as if he is enjoying the dog food. (I browsed through this thread and he's adorable.)

Thank you Cotton. I swear that hamster listens to me. When he was out the other day and I was trying to decide whether to continue the Baytril or not, I said, Nugget I could really do to have a look underneath you and see if the lumps are still the same or if they've got better. He stopped and listened so I said it again. He then sat down on his haunches and started grooming himself underneath and licking his belly - so I could see his underside! I still couldn't see a lot really at that angle, but I can see when he walks that he hangs down underneath and his fur is pushed outwards a bit.

Bless him he does seem to listen doesn't he. Glad he is doing ok now on the Baytril, I'm sure the metacam will be making him feel better too. It is difficult adjusting their cage when they start to find it harder to move about, sort of have to compromise between their stress levels and what's best for them. Vet visits really can be especially bad for robos, all of mine have got unbelievably stressed from it which makes it even worse. But it's good that he is happier now and with his new setup too.

I agree robos really don't like vet visits! I think the worst bit for Nugget was being held up in the air in a glass jar. If the vet had waited a moment I was going to say I could hold him so she could have a look, because he's still when you hold him. On the other hand she did get a really good look at his underside.

Yes I really do need to sort out Nugget's cage - it's ready for a substrate clean as well. He is going to hate it. I'm putting it off a bit and just spot cleaning and pressing the odd bit of substrate down, as he's just starting to settle a bit. On the other hand he doesn't like me doing that either!

It will be very difficult when I come to clean his cage as he has a very cosy sizeable "cave"/underground burrow just in front of his wheel with a cork roof! The piece of cork was there as a step up to the wheel and he made a lovely burrow under it - very neat and tidy and cosy. He also has his labyrinth house with a nest and sizeable hoard in as well at the other end.

I might see if I can save the burrow and do the rest of the cage - if it's clean enough.

Serendipity, that's funny about Nugget listening to you when you wanted to examine him. Not so funny re: the jar exam of his underside, although great that the veterinarian could get a good view of everything.

Nugget's home looks fantastic. You have really put a lot of care and attention into it. There is so much there to keep him engaged. He has a great home.
