Thank you Cypher and Coco. I put his food out early today and he popped out to check what was going on. He does look a bit thin and raggedy and not too great. I think the vet visit was very stressful for him. On the other hand I read Doric Hamstery's piece on Robos and apparently they can get a bit raggy and ropey looking from a year onwards. He seems full of energy and acting normally which is the main thing. I've put a homeopathic arnica sugar ball out for him - just in case it helps settle him. He seems very alert to me putting my hand in his cage!

Dear little Nugget. He was out at lunch time as usual. Despite having a lower shallow ramp I thought he had been avoiding it so put a bit of strawberry up there last night to see if he was using it. At lunch time I saw him really struggle up the ramp and he clearly has discomfort on his underside and seems to be walking to avoid it hurting.

I have started the Metacam (correct dose thanks to Vectis and after double checking with another vet as it is dog Metacam) - He should be having 0.01ml max of the dog Metacam. I am giving him one drop - which is slightly under 0.01 ml I reckon - such tiny amounts to sort. And thankfully he likes it. He didn't run away from the syringe - clearly the sweetness tempted him to investigate. He licked the drop from the end of the syringe and then wanted more and tried to bite the syringe

I will start the baytril when I receive the tasty stuff that Vectis recommended for disguising it. And try giving him it in a tiny bit of that food.

I don't know if it's tumour or infection but as he is clearly suffering some pain and discomfort now (except when running on his saucer or on the flat) I will use both and if the baytril doesn't help then it's a tumour.

He seems a bit more relaxed today and sat for a little chat. He does look a bit thin and raggy.

I will wait for the right moment to remove his ramp and shelf and have everything at floor level and flattened out a bit, so he can use his sand bath again - it's clear it has hardly been used recently (it's on the shelf).

I am not impressed with the vet for showing me the wrong marking on the syringe and telling me that was the amount to give (for both meds) as it was 10 times the prescribed dose. And in fact the prescribed dose of Metacam it seems is also incorrect. He needs 0.01ml of dog Metacam. If it was cat Metacam it would be 0.03ml. Double checked with another vet (and some expert advice on here thank you!).

So this afternoon I put the food out a bit earlier than usual and moved Nugget's sand bath and food bowl off the shelf down to floor level. He popped out and had a good check of what I was doing to see if he approved. I don't want to change too much all at once so will leave the shelf and ramp for now but he has no need to go up there now.

He clearly did approve as he promptly jumped in his sand bath for a roll and then hopped into his food bowl. I've pushed them into the substrate a bit so there is no hard lip to get over for his painful tummy.

Poor little Nugget. Don't like to hear that he is struggling with his tummy. Sensible to re arrange things at ground level for him. Sure that will be for the best. The single drop of the metacam sounds right. Glad Vectis could help with advice and that there might be a good way to get the baytril into a robo. Fingers crossed for the little fellow.

I'm really sorry to hear that Nugget is struggling & showing more signs of being in pain but it's great that he likes the metacam & I'm sure, along with the changes you''ve made to his cage that will help him stay more comfortable & able to continue a good quality of life.
Glad he approves of the changes & has been enjoying his sand again bless him.

Just wanted to clarify, in case anyone reads this in future re meds - that he is having 0.01ml of Metacam (the 1.5mg per ml dog Metacam), and 0.02ml of Baytril.

On the previous page I had put 0.3 and 0.2 - which is what the vet demonstrated on the syringe, but was 10 times too much. Anyway prescription on bottle was correct 0.02ml of Baytril and 0.03ml of Metacam (now adjusted down to 0.01ml which is correct for the strength and his size).

I noticed he didn't seem to have been using his food bowl recently- wasn't too worried as I scatter feed as well but I think he'll be happier being able to access the food bowl easier and he definitely needs access to his sand bath - he's always loved that.

The difficulty climbing does seem to have come on very quickly.

Nugget is refusing the Metacam today. Instead of licking it off the syringe he batted the syringe out of the way and then ignored it. He is quite grumpy. Maybe because I fiddled in his cage yesterday, and the syringe is another intrusion. Anyway he's enjoying using his sand bath quite a bit now it's at floor level. The Applaws has arrived so will try starting the Baytril later. May have to put the Metacam in food as well if he won't take it off the syringe from now on.

That's a shame about the syringe but maybe he's finding it a bit too intrusive after the initial novelty might be easier to try that in food too, at least you know he likes it so he'll probably eat it.
Hope he enjoys the Applaws, all my hams have loved it.

I think I got the wrong Applaws. It said beef and chicken but is not like a squidgy food with gravy - it's whole pieces of meat encased in jelly. Have decided not to try it as couldn't get a small enough piece that's likely to be eated - other than just a piece of meat. The Hunter food should be here tomorrow so I'll try tomorrow. Meanwhile I have another 5 packs of Applaws! So will give it to cat owners next door.

Applaws make foods in broth and also varietys in jelly; you mustve accidentally bought the jelly ones! I use these cans (they also have pouches, if you'd prefer). Other options would be Cosma Nature. They recently brought out these; theyre smaller portions, so should be less waste. I just ordered some for our hedgehog this week to see what theyre like!

You could also try things like baby food, or even just boil something sweeter like carrots yourself and mash them into a puree so they could be taken up with a syringe, to try and entice him that way.
