Awesome birthday gift
I've been wanting a hamster and have considered different species and researched them all. Well my husband surprised me with an adorable white faced male robo hamster for my birthday, his name is Shagrath. I would post pictures but I'm not tech savvy, Shagrath is already fairly tame he come to me when I'm feeding him and let's me pet him sometimes. I've had him for over a week and wish to begin taming him, especially since it seems like he wants my attention, any advice on taming would be helpful and appreciated.

Re: Awesome birthday gift
Congratulations Gothicwarrior on your robo hammy Shagrath.
It sounds like he's pretty tame, I would talk softly to him as often as you can, offer him treats and if he takes them be sure to praise him.
Build up his confidence.
Also use the bath, put a towel down, you can either sit or lie in bath and let him get familiar with you. Keep this to 20 minutes.
When transporting him from the cage to bath use like a box, tin or tub put a little treat in it and let him climb into it.

Re: Awesome birthday gift
Congrats! What a lovely birthday present, Shagrath sounds adorable
Look forward to hearing more about him, there's a thread here that explains how to post photos.

He does sound quite tame already, I wouldn't use the bath for a robo or any dwarf ham as it can be overwhelming for them but they usually do well in a taming bin, a large plastic box with some toys, maybe his wheel & you can tame/interact with him in there.

Re: Awesome birthday gift
Aw, happy birthday and congratulations! Good husband! I love a little robo, me. I'm not sure I'd try the bath tub for taming - great with a Syrian though. I found a plastic tub worked well. A bit of substrate for familiar smell, a wheel is good, a sand bath is nice and a box or loo roll for hiding in (to feel secure) but not so much that they're interested in that and not you. I personally liked a shallower tub (but nothing they could get out of) as you can get your hand a bit flatter in the tub. With Hector, I put a sunflower seed in my hand and got him used to walking on/over my hand to get the snack. Seemed to work well and get him used to a hand lurking about. And then you can go from there. If you start lifting him up when on your hand, don't lift too high so he can jump off sadly if he wants to. Can't wait to see him!
