Default A few questions from a returning owner

Hello there!

I've recently returned to hamster care and I'm so glad I did, I love my new furry friend and want to provide the best environment as possible.

So I have a few questions for you folks thanks in advance!

1. When my Robo runs on his wheel stops thenflys around the wheel before falling, it is safe? I made sure to move any hard objects from the flight path just in case haha, but I'm just wondering if it's normal for my friend to do this, the Syrian hamster I had any years ago didn't do this

2. How can I tell the gender of my robo?

3. Is it the norm for robos to sleep through the night for a long time?

4. I uploaded the enclosure for my friend until I get more toys for him/her, is this an ok enclosure for my friend?

5. Added a picture of my furry friend His/Her name is DIO

Thanks and have a nice day!

Regards
Nick

Hi and welcome to HC! Congrats on Dio!
It’s common for hams (especially robos) to go flying out of their wheels. I wouldn’t worry about it.
The link mehrfabig gave you is very good! I can’t wait to know the gender of Dio!
I can’t really tell have the cage is set up. Can you get a brighter and closer photo of it?
Dio is absolutely gorgeous! I’d love to see more pictures of her/him! If you have any questions or concerns feel free to ask!

Thank you both for your replies, that link was very useful!

I will try and get more Pictures of DIO when he decides to wake up XD

Also, I've tried to handle DIO but I've noticed he bites ALOT, do you guys have many tips to counter this?

Thanks again
Nick

Flying out of the wheel isn't unusual, often they will stop doing it as they get the hang of things & learn how to brake properly! It is more of a problem with saucers & open wheels though, if you're concerned then you might want to think about getting an enclosed wheel like the wodent wheel or silent runner.
They are normally most active around dawn & dusk so will sleep for some time during the night, if he's still new he'll be settling in & his activity patterns may change with time.
Your tank looks like a good size, still quite a lot of open space so I would try to put more in it when you can, deeper substrate would be really good so he can dig & burrow which they love to do, do you have a sand bath in there, it's hard to see but a sand bath with chinchilla sand not dust is important to keep their fur & skin in good condition as well as being a lot of fun for them.
Things like cork tubes & tunnels (best to freeze these for a week before using), bendy bridges, an egg box with a hole cut out in each end or other small cardboard boxes or tubes work well for them.

Cage seems to looks ok from what I can see - just make sure to fill it up with lots of things to do. Is there digging space (thick bedding)? I can’t really tell. Agree with better photo as we can be more helpful! Or at least cage dimensions.

Is it proper bites or a nibble? Robos can be nibbly sometimes but actual biting not too often. If it’s biting he might be nervous and scared of your hands so do keep trying with the taming, and do this outside the cage if you’re not already since he could be cage territorial.
Make sure your hands are washed and soaped before handling and keep your fingers tucked away! Biting knuckles doesn’t really hurt. If you have another box and put bedding in there and use it as a taming zone, you can bury your hand or at least your fingers in the bedding and it’ll allow him to climb on it and not bite properly. Sometimes biting is something they grow out of or they will realise that hands are okay, so fingers crossed.

As for robo sleeping patterns - usually they’re awake in the night but can and do take long naps. They spend a lot of time asleep so his sleep schedule isn’t something I’d worry about as it is different for every hamster.

The wheel flying is not ideal obviously and as robos mature they generally get the hang of it and manage to gain control. If it’s the flying saucer that’s the problem and you’re worried you can limit it to playpen time but again it’s not really an issue if you’ve cleared the area around the wheel.
