Scared hamster?
I've had my two robos for about a year and a half(they live in separate cages) and Wilson is happy to sit in my hand etc. Hamlet has always been more timid and reluctant to be held, and I was wondering if anyone had any tips to make him more comfortable with me? I feel as if I have always given him the appropriate care, and been gentle and slow with him. Perhaps his nervousness has been enhanced by the fact I have been away for 10 days? Any tips would be welcome and appreciated.

Re: Scared hamster?
Try rubbing a tissue or some toilet tissue (aka toilet paper) (clean) on your hands/arms and shred it then put it in Hamlet's cage. Also, hand feeding him treats would help. When you clean Hamlet's cage, before putting in the bedding, rub your hands on the walls and floor of the cage. when you put the bedding in move it around with your hands so it gets your scent on it. sprinkle some of the old bedding on top of the new bedding though so he doesn't go into shock or anything. Hamlet should be more comfortable around you soon. . Probably a good idea to not leave for 10 days anymore if he was calm around you before you left.

Re: Scared hamster?
Stereotypically, robos tend to be more difficult than other species to fully tame down, and even then some never truly become tame. You being away for ten days likely contributed to it as in hamster time, that's quite a long time! My recommendation would be confidence taming. Confidence taming is all about teaching your hamster that you're no threat to them, and that your presence means good things. You can begin by feeding treats each time you near Hamlet's cage so that he'll come out each time he senses you've come in the room. You can also lure him onto your hand and feed him treats whenever he sits still. Start by only making him sit there for a second or two, and slowly increase the duration in which you want him to sit for.
Remember too though, not all hamsters enjoy being held and sometimes they're a "look don't touch" kind of pet. This too is perfectly okay as long as they're healthy and happy, and may be something to consider if after many tries they've still not tamed down

Thanks for your response! You may be right about the 'look don't touch' personality but I will definitely give your tips a go!
