Default Leia and her new lookout

I recently purchased this for Leia and so far she loves it.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The funny thing is that I put litter up there for her and she definitely doesn't want anything up there. She will go so far as to push all the litter down the tube so that it is completely bare. I've caught her a few times pulling food out of her cheeks and eating up there. I've also caught her a few times completely asleep up there. Strange because there is nothing covering her at all. The downfall about their not being any litter is that it starts to stink pretty quickly due to her going to the bathroom up there. Anybody else experience anything like this?

I'll see if I can get some pictures this evening.

Tubes aren't generally recommended due to the poor ventilation.. They get stinky quickly and it isn't healthy for the hamster. Syrians can also get stuck in them but I guess that isn't going to happen with a dwarf.

With the tubes only being vertical, I wasn't too worried about this and the top portion has decent enough ventilation. When I do clean the tubes, I use something similar to this and it works fairly well.

For the top, I've learned now to wipe it out daily. She definitely likes it up there, just without litter.

She may keep using it as a toilet area. It will be easy to clean. Although it would be less smelly if she would allow litter in there.

Try to encourage her to sleep/hoard food somewhere away from the toilet area by giving her a dark place to nest. So hopefully she will not nest there all the time.

I've known many hamsters to enjoy that particular lookout, especially, and quite unfortunately for hiding their hoard. As CMB said, try to discourage her from using that as a nest as it has poor ventilation and can build up moisture. Definitely a fun addition if monitored!

I tend to go for the wider rat tubes for mine. If you see your ham using it as a hoard or sleeping area then remove it, tubes that narrow can get quite smelly when they do that.

I notice this is in the Roborovski thread? My main concern would be the vertical height for a robo? They have long, thin and speedy back legs, so how does your little one get down without problems? Tubes are generally best at a safe angle rather than straight up and down like that.

Is the tube going up to the housing area as long as it is in the image? If it is, I would try and shorten it or use a corner tube into the unit and the longer tube running at an angle to make going in and out easy. Crittertrail tubes are fine for a robo, but not vertically as they pose a real danger if the robo falls down inside the tube.

It's funny/not funny that you mentioned this. Leia never had any problems climbing up the tube, but going down I noticed that she struggled. Luckily she never fell. I went ahead and removed two of the tube pieces and now she zooms up and down the tube with no issues at all.
