Hector: The Blurry Bobble
I promised an intro for Hector a couple of weeks ago, but hadn't counted on how long it would take to get a recognisably hamster-shaped picture of my newest little critter...
After losing Dexter only three months after rescuing him, it took a while before I was ready for a new face in the hamstery. I've long wanted a Robo, and about a month ago saw a tiny ball of fluff in the P@H adoption centre. His info said he had been in there about 3 months, so I estimate his age now to be about 7 months old.
He's settled quickly into his Tamburino tank, and absolutely loves his silent spinner and mouse ball. I can't get over how fast his little feet move in them! I always like to try and get all my hamsters used to being handled in case of vet visits etc, and fortunately he's both curious and very fond of biscuits, so taming has been going pretty well. He's happy to accept hand-fed treats and back stroking, but is still a bit wary of being picked up. We're getting there, though
(Although picture two is completely out of focus, I've kept it because it somehow seems to sum him up!)

Re: Hector: The Blurry Bobble
So happy for you to have found Bobble, loving his name! I really mis having a wee robo as they are such manic little hamsters with their own busy agenda! I did pick up on the fact that you mentioned using a `mouse ball` though? Robos shouldn`t really use a hamster ball due to their speed and spindly long back legs. I appreciate the use of the ball for coaxing him out if he needs to be removed from his cage, but a secure play area would benefit him best. They can injure themselves easily by leaping or falling just due to their craziness, so if he`s your first ever robo, take care and always keep him low down and secure. x

By mouse ball I mean the one in this link:
Exercise Ball on Stand
I've used them for my Chinese hams - Bolt used to use hers a lot, but decided a couple of months ago that it would make a lovely nest instead, so has filled it up with comfy bedding
Hector's sits on its stand in his cage - if he didn't use it I'd remove it, but he seems to quite like it to groom himself in, or have a little jogging session. I don't use it as a roll-around-the-floor hamster ball, for play sessions/cleanouts he gets to free-roam the bathroom (with plenty of toys, treats and hiding spots to explore).

Re: Hector: The Blurry Bobble
Ah, looks like a safer option then! How does that work then, does it have a side hole entrance? How does the hamster go in? Does the ball spin in just the one direction? I`ve seen these before but never paid much attention to them. x

Re: Hector: The Blurry Bobble
The entrances are on both sides - it's the gaps between the three spokes you can see on the ball itself. At first glance they seem a bit small, but none of my lot have had a problem getting in or out.
On the stand, the ball will spin both forwards and backwards. Now I think about it, you can't use it off the stand anyway, as it doesn't come with the alternative solid-side stoppers that would be needed for floor use.
The ball is nice & solid, but the stand is a bit easy to break if you're not careful when assembling it. I use short metal screws instead of the plastic screws that come with it (to mount the ball on), as the plastic ones are a nuisance to fit.

Re: Hector: The Blurry Bobble
Ah yes, I see the gaps at the sides now. Read a few of the Amazon reviews and they say it can be quite flimsy, although for a fiver what do they expect! I see your point though about securing it with metal screws to stop it from moving about or toppling off the stand. A little touch of Vaseline would prevent any noise if it ever starts to squeak or screech!
As far as a `ball` goes, these do seem quite fun, but the difference is, the hamster chooses to go in and come out, so it`s not like a standard hamster ball, it can be used as a running wheel, which is nice. x

Re: Hector: The Blurry Bobble
Hambobs, can you tell me please how wide the ventilation slits are? I suppose what I`m asking is, are the slits actually on the running surface, or situated to the sides of the ball? Just wanted to know if the hamster would be running on these holes or if the running surface inside the ball was flat? x

I've attached a couple of pictures for you. The slits are relatively short, so the ham doesn't have to run on them. You can see a couple of indents on the ball, which is where the two halves attach together. This means there are three slightly raised areas inside the ball, but as far as I can tell the hamsters don't notice them while running
