Escaped!
Hello,
My friend's Robo hamster (George) escaped last night, and he has searched everywhere but to no avail.
Does anyone have any ideas, or tips about what the best thing to do would be?
He is giving up hope of ever finding him, which would be heartbreaking as this also means that the other Robo (Henry) would be suddenly alone.
Do they ever come back? We hate the thought of him out there alone somewhere!
Thanks everyone.

Re: Escaped!
Do you have any idea if he's still in the room where he escaped or do you think he got out of there? Robos are so tiny he could slip through the tiniest of gaps but they do often come back so don't give up hope.
Setting up some kind of bucket trap is usually the best thing, a bucket might be a bit big for a robo but the idea is to use a container they can't climb out of, make some steps to get in, books or something would do, put some substrate in the container for a soft landing & some food or favourite treats & also put a little on the steps to tempt him in.
On hard floors you can put flour down & watch out for little foot prints, if he's still around that can give you an idea of where he might be.
Good luck, hope you do get him back.

Re: Escaped!
Thanks so much, the bucket trap is a good idea.
No idea if he is still in the room, the doors were closed, but as you say they are so small he could have slipped underneath.
I'll post something on here if he turns up. fingers crossed.

Re: Escaped!
When you make a bucket trap do you have to use a straw going through a plastic bottle with peanut butter on it, so the hamster would attempt to go to the peanut butter then fall into the bucket? That takes a little harder work. You have to drill a hold through a plastic soda bottle and then have a large straw balancing on both sides of the bucket. Erins animals had a video on how to make a bucket trap. Not sure if all that is necessary or not?

Re: Escaped!
Put something across the bottom of the door so he can't get under it (assuming he's still in the room). Then set up the bucket trap. Some people have had success with human mouse traps as well - maybe easier with a robo.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Pest-Stop-P...ane+mouse+trap
If you use one of these, put some hammy chocolate at the very far end - as far back as possible - otherwise they can reach in and wedge the door open while taking the treat!
I think someone else suggested putting their wheel out as well, and maybe put some food in the wheel. Do all three!
What cage does he have? You could use the cage as the bucket trap - that worked for someone recently. Put the cage near somewhere he might be (eg under a cupboard or somewhere else where it looks dark. Set up the pile of books or magazines next to the cage leading to the door and a trail of food up the magazines and some tasty veggies and cheese inside the cage. He might just end up back in the cage. If the cage has a top door, set up the magazines to go to the top of the cage and one along the top up to the door and a nice deep pile of substrate under the door with nothing hard to fall on, and the veggies etc near the pile of substrate - so he might jump in to get them.

Re: Escaped!
Have the other hamster in the cage near the trap. It may help attract the one that escaped.
If you have a hamster hide/house you could leave it out with familiar smelling nesting material. You may find the escaped hamster asleep in there once daylight comes. It may be a good idea to block the entrance before lifting the hide/house and transferring it to a box/cage etc just in case the hamster is in there and moving it makes the hamster run out.
Hope the hamster is found soon and it alright.

Re: Escaped!
Thanks for all of the suggestions, we've done all of what's been recommended but still no sign.
There's no way of knowing whether he has got under doors, between walls or even found a way to get outside.
It's very sad, but not giving up all hope yet. He has been using two cages that were connected, so one of these has been left out whilst the other is housing Henry.
Hopefully he will come back today, my friend left flour on the floor to track any paw prints. ;(

Re: Escaped!
I just want to add that when your friend finds and recaptures the escapee, they will most likely NOT be able to place him back with Henry. The normal rule of thumb with Robos is once separated, always separated as Henry will have adjusted to solitary living and will not want to share with any other Hamster.

Re: Escaped!
Thank you, I did wonder that.
I've let him know this, and I have a spare Savic Mickey 2XL at home anyway should he need it.
Still no sign, other people have said that they can turn up weeks later, but I'm not sure now. No sign of him in or around the bucket trap, or any or the other nests scattered about.

Re: Escaped!
Sorry to hear you've had no sightings of the little guy, they can survive for surprisingly long periods then suddenly turn up again so there may still be hope.
