Default long nails?

Hi,
So I got my Roborovski Jade late August 2016 from Pets at home, and ever since buying her i've noticed her really long nails. There is no way i can take her to the vet to have them trimmed because of how skittish/ nervous of people she is (she runs and hides as soon as she sees anyone) and i don't trust sterilised rocks since I have a dog who pees everywhere in the garden and i would worry. So my question is how can i get them trimmed down without a vet since that would terrify her.
Thank you

Can you get some sort of aquarium rock or resin items? That can work in place of sterilized rocks instead of having to take a risk because of your dog!Reptile resin is also safe by the way

You could get a rock from the garden center? Then sterlize it maybe? I did that! They had some loose ones quite cheap

I did that with my guinea pigs as well. Haven't got any yet for my WW. A deep sand bath can help if they dig in it. Rough untreated wood from a pet shop is another way. I have a flat piece of cork from the reptile section. It is a little pricey but looks great in a natural themed cage.

There's also this video which might help with some other ideas. Pinkneon I think Sweep might enjoy the 4th method .

I bought coasters made of slate and they were 4 for 99p. I keep them under the boys water bottle and it keeps their nails nice and trim. I learnt that from here

Also, do you have a sand bath available for your Robo? The sand helps a little too.

Smile Re: long nails?

Hi Thank you for the replies,
i went to Pets at Home the other day and found a small animal chewable bridge which has a rough texture. I bought it for the rough surface in her cage and i think it is gradually working. Yes she does have a sand bath which she digs in but it doesnt seem to help. If this bridge doesn't work i will try one of the suggestions on here.
thank you

I'm afraid that once the hamsters nails are long you need a vet to trim them
So the vet would have 2 people to trim nails, if that doesn't work, they will sedate them

What I did was buy a Wodent Wheel with a nail trimming track which seems to work well.

Long nails aren't a problem unless the are curling under or causing discomfort to your hamster

Unfortunately, if it's a bendy bridge, then it won't work very well unless your robo runs up and down for hours a day. They are just too smooth.

I would really recommend smooth rocks from a garden centre or rough untreated wood from the reptile section in a pet shop. Viovet also sells some wood pieces.

The bridge may help a little if it's the one I'm thinking of (don't think it's a bendy bridge chesca) but you do need to have as many rough surfaces as possible (nothing too rough that will hurt pads) many hams still need their nails trimmed at the vet though.

CB I think you've had bad experiences at the vet so just in case anyone else is worried with a good vet nail trimming is a very simple fairly stress free one person procedure & if you have an extra pair of hands to help not that difficult to do yourself at home.

Cypher, I haven't had any bad experiences with the vet

My advice still stands It's a 2 person job at the vets, especially a robo. After the nails are short then you can use rocks/stones as maintenance. Like I said if they aren't bothering the hamster I'd leave them alone
