Default Cage cleanout for a pair of Robos

Hi,

Got a pair of robos last weekend, they are the best of friends and the taming process is going really well. Will take food from my hands and even jump on my hand, they seem very happy!

have got this cage:
Ferplast Duna Multy Small Animal Cage, 71 x 46 x 31.5 cm, Blue: Amazon.co.uk: Pet Supplies

Ferplast Duna Multy is 70x45 sized cage, how often should I be looking at cleaning the cage? should I only clean out half the cage so they have still have sawdust with their scent on it?

Thanks

Clean the toilet area every 3 days approximately. Take out the wet substrate, but don't wash to much as their scent helps to keep the toilet corner in use.

Don't do a full clean. Remove some substrate/nesting material and add some fresh. Remove any wet food from the hoard and add fresh food to the hoard.

Clean toys a week after changing substrate/nesting material.

See Erin's you tube video on cage cleaning to explain it better.

You shouldn't need to do much cleaning, spot clean daily removing anything that's been peed on & any fresh veg or other fresh food that hasn't been eaten.
As CMB says never do a full cage clean, if they have a good deep layer of substrate & enjoy a good dig around or burrow a fair bit then you will probably find that most of what does need cleaning is at the base of the tank so you could just clean no more than half at a time every two or three weeks, maybe even less, always keep back some of the nest if you clean that area & the same with food hoards, if the food is getting a bit old you can remove it & replace it with some fresh ham mix.

As the others say. Also just wondered if you knew about things to avoid with a pair of dwarf hamsters. Cypher knows more about dwarf hamsters, but I think you are supposed to have two of everything to avoid fights and them being territorial. eg two houses, two water bottles, two food bowls, two wheels. And no levels or platforms as that can make them territorial with each other. Glad taming is going well!

To add to Serendipity, I was going to say to make sure you have an extra cage set-up ready in case they start fighting. Thus can happen in the middle of the night so it's a must have as pairs often need splitting up.

Hopefully you'll be fine but like I was saying, just in case. If one starts agressively chasing the other around the cage or blood is drawn then they must be split up immediately.

Just so your aware that pairs can often turn on each other...

Thanks for all the advice, the video on cage cleaning was excellent! Will give them a mini clean out in a few weeks in adition to spot cleaning.

Yeah they have two of everything and the spare cage just encase, will try and get a couple of photos(that aren't a hamster shaped blur) and upload them.

Cheers!

Ooh they are gorgeous - and look so tiny! I take it you like Kevin Bacon then lol. Just wondering if your silent spinners are working ok. If they're new ones that is. People have been having problems with them not spinning properly and being very stiff, since a manufacturing change. If you have a problem with them, I'd take them back for a refund and get a 9" Silent Runner wheel or an 8" Trixie wheel instead.
