My robos are fighting! Please help!
I have 3 female robo hamsters. They have been together for a little over a year now. They lived in a large tank(I believe it is a 30 gallon tank. I bought it for my syrian) and I made sure that there was (more than) enough food and everything available for them. I had learned that trio is not a good number to have as they might end up picking on one of them but they had been doing perfectly fine. I would hear squeaks and see them fight like once in a long while but it was never serious and would last for like 5 seconds. They always sleep together even if I provide many housings. They got along really well.
Vanilla, the smallest one of the three, had always been the most active one. She would always be the only one running around the cage while the other two are hiding in the house waiting for me to turn off the light and go to sleep. I thought that she was just being active. It had been like this ever since. But recently I had noticed that she became really skinny. I added a lot of food. Way more than enough and she IS ALWAYS eating. Until now I still don't understand why is she the skinniest/smallest one of the three when she's always out eating.
Just about half an hour ago I heard really loud squeaks and I saw Chestnut and Vanilla fighting. They were basically merged together and I couldn't tell what was going on. They were not moving/flipping around but just there merged into a ball making loud squeaks. I used a toy in the cage to separate them and I noticed that Vanilla was bleeding around her nose. I basically freaked out.
I moved her out of the cage and put her in a small cage (5gallon.) She walked around the cage for a bit and I noticed that her left back leg was also injured. I'm not sure if it broken or just bitten. I really can't tell. It doesn't look very new and she can still move around and run on the wheel. I cannot afford the vet. I had been to the vet a few times and it costed me at least $200 EVERY TIME. I cannot afford that anymore. I want to know what I can do for her. It looks like she's hurting. And she looks very lonely and afraid. I'm sure this is probably the first time in her entire life being by herself. Right now she's sleeping in the corner with her bloody nose.
Is there anything I can apply to help her ease/clean/heal the wound? Will she die of loneliness? I'm really afraid because I had Syrian hamsters and when I had to separate my Hanii from her babies, she died off wet tail a month later. She looked very lonely and sad and I assumed it was due to being separated from her babies?? It could be due to pregnancy. I'm not very sure but I'm really afraid right now. I don't know if the other two will start a fight among themselves.. Is there anything I can do? Please help

Re: My robos are fighting! Please help!
Hi Miint. First of all, you have done exactly the right thing by removing her from imminent danger. She will need quiet time now so just provide her with her cage comforts, even if these are home-made from cardboard boxes and toilet roll tubes. She needs a cage/tub of her own now and no, she won`t get lonely. These things happen sadly and we have to accept that hamsters have their own reasons for falling out. It`s never logical to place human feelings and emotions into it because some owners try to get the robos back together again feeling sorry for the lonely one and that`s a big no go, especially when serious ball fights and injuries have already occurred. She has been `chased `from the territory and because she couldn`t run away, was constantly attacked. Captive hamsters have no way of escaping a cage as they can in the wild.
Use saline on any wounds. Boil the kettle, pour a pint of boiled water into a glass jug and add one teaspoonful of table salt or sea salt. Allow the salt to melt in the hot water and allow to cool right down. It can be poured into a sterile glass bottle and kept in the fridge, but it`s easy to mix up fresh when required really and it`s cheap to make.
Gently wipe any bloodied wounds with a clean cotton pad where necessary. Monitor her for any signs that she`s not coping, but most robos are tough and she will need time to eat, sleep and get used to having her own space. Don`t feel bad about this. The main thing is, she`s safe now.
Vanilla will cope. Just give her time and love. The other two remaining robos could also end up fighting due to the re-adjustment of their pack, so keep a close eye on them for any similar signs of bullying or start of escalations.
How is Vanilla now? And no, it`s not really a good idea to keep dwarf hamsters in pairs or groups as this is usually the end result sadly, even though many live well together for a time, it`s never guaranteed. x

Re: My robos are fighting! Please help!
I agree with what racinghamster has said and the sad fact is that when I went to purchase my dwarf hamster I had the intentions of having 2 and thankfully the lovely woman told me tat it's a bad idea because even though some hamsters maybe able to live together it may not last long before they start fighting. throughout hamster owning I have learned hamsters aren't really pack animals they want their owners to themselves!
hope she is okay keep us updated on how she is doing xx

Excellent advice from RH there. Hope Vanilla is feeling better soon. You'll need another cage or tank asap for her, so she can get back to normal a bit.

I'll just add that hamster, especially Syrians, don't really have the ability to feel lonely, so don't feel bad about your old hamster or this hamster having to love on its own (:

Re: My robos are fighting! Please help!
I will strengthen that and say far from being lonely, she will be feeling relieved to be free from the bullying. She will need cage comforts like RH says, a cardboard box upsidedown house with a door cut in it etc. When she recovers and her leg gets better she will need a proper sized cage of her own with a wheel. 5 gallons is much too small for a permanent cage but for the moment might not be the worst thing. Keep an eye on her for signs of cage stress but don't confuse that with loneliness.
Good luck and keep us updated with how she is doing. Is she white? I am guessing from the name

Re: My robos are fighting! Please help!
So sorry to hear that your girls fell out. A whole year and then falling out.
I hope Vanilla starts to recover from her injuries and enjoys the peace and quiet of her new home, when you find a suitable one for her.
Hopefully your other two will be fine now.

Re: My robos are fighting! Please help!
My two to is fell out within a week and I had to delegate them. They both are very happy and doing well in their own homes. Pope had a very bad injury. I went to bed and they were fine and woke up to him having half the fur of his back missing. I was advised to clean with warm salt water and it healed up lovely. My Syrian has a wound at the moment and they said warm salt water again. If you are worried that her injuries aren't healing then take her to the vets or give them a call. My vets offers great advice over the phone
