Re: Hector: The Blurry Bobble
Thanks so much for this Hambobs, really helpful to see the ball close up. I`ve been telling some of the mouse forum members about this because mice love to play in such things, but wanted to make sure it was safe/suitable first, many thanks. x

Re: Hector: The Blurry Bobble
Hector's adventures on the bathroom floor during cage cleanouts have recently been replaced by adventures on the living room couch, which he seems to prefer as it's a smaller area.
He's now around a year old, and has become so accustomed to his hand-fed treats that when he hears me coming he bounces around the cage like a pinball until I present it to him, and has learned to tolerate me stroking him gently while he eats it, which I love as it means I get to interact with him almost every day.
Some fairly recent pics...

Re: Hector: The Blurry Bobble
Awww he is so teeny and cute. My two roborovskis are still very wary of my hands and vanish as soon as I try to get a hand into their cages. (They live separately). I would LOVE to be able to stroke them.
Did it take you long to get him to take treats/let you stroke him?

There's something about the name Hector that really suits a Robo. Hectors of the world unite!

It took about a month before he accepted the stroking without scuttling away. I think he's quite food-oriented for a Robo, which did help - he was too eager to scoff his treat to run away and hide first!
I find the most valuable tool for taming any dwarf hamster is a snuggle pouch (used to be able to get them on Amazon but now eBay seems to be the best online option. Some pet shops may also stock them..) You coax them into the pouch, then place it on your lap and let them come out and explore in their own time (can take a while). Handle them for short periods while letting them run back to the pouch when they need to, so they feel they have a safe place.
It can take months, but I've been able to tame all of my dwarfs this way (Chinese, Russian, Robo) to the point where they are tame enough to be picked up out of the cage, which I like to do, as it makes rounding them up for cleaning or vet visits that much easier

Re: Hector: The Blurry Bobble
Ooo thanks. A snuggle pouch sounds good. Will have a look on youtube for ideas.
I have had them just over a month but they have moved to separate cages due to fighting so have taken a little extra time to properly settle.

Re: Hector: The Blurry Bobble
Well, it's been awhile since Hector's last update - he reached his 2nd birthday sometime in January & is still going strong
He continues to be a happy little man, content to potter around collecting his scatter-feed & then racing round in his wheel for a bit of variety. His biscuit addiction is still the reason I manage to have quite a bit of contact with him, although he occasionally mistakes my finger for the biscuit in his enthusiasm, which is a bit like being gripped by a very tiny vice
Here he is in all his hobbit-footed glory...
