Question Dumping out pouches?

Like many of you, I have a shy little Robo, a little older than three months. As soon as I place him in my hand, he completely empties his pouches - icky! Out comes all of his food. Is there any reason why this may be happening? Right now I'm chalking it up to nerves.

I could be wrong, but the robos at my college do the same thing then they get stressed. I think it might have something to do with making it as easy as possible to escape like in the wild

It is a protective mechanism they have when they are scared. They empty the pouches and hope the potential predator will be busy checking out the food so they can then run off and escape.
Most dwarfies do this. We call it the 'millet spew' LOL

Awh poor lil guy! Is there anything I can do to calm him down before playtime? I always give him as much time as he needs to crawl out into my hand.

Not really - it is more instinctive I think. Add a teaspoon of budgie seed to you hand and let him hoover it up again. Put it back in his dish if he doesn't take it. As long as he is staying on the hand he must feel reasonably comfortable.
Our very tame old winter whites still did it all their lives so it's just something they do I think!

Oh he LOVES just laying in my hand, he gets comfortable immediately and starts to doze off to sleep, haha. In general though, he's pretty timid - I can even feel him trembling sometimes. He also seems extremely fearful of leaving my hand once he's in it -- almost like he's treating the ground around him as lava, lol
