That Spot
That spot, the little gray spot, Charlotte's gray spot. Will it disappear completely? I've read in places that the spot on Platinum Robos disappear before their first year, but Charlotte is a year and three months and the spot has only gotten a bit smaller and lighter. We think her spot is really cute and we don't want it to go away.

Re: That Spot
White Robos with a dark spot on their heads are not Platinum Robos, they are 'Head Spot' Robos.
I have found that with age the spot actually gets darker, and i havent yet seen one disappear, but i havent been keeping them that long yet - but i wouldnt have thought it would dissapear

Re: That Spot
Huh, than Roborovski Hamsters is wrong than, that site calls them Platinum or White Robos.
Maybe Charlotte is just special? Or she is just grooming her spot differently now.

Re: That Spot
Yes, White Robos are sometimes called Platinum Robos but yours is not a White or a Platinum, it is a 'Head Spot' Robo

Re: That Spot
Hamtastics robos are head spots, whizzbit of the pompompoms is a platinum (grey tip ears) and there are pure whites with no markings at all.
sometimes fur will be darker as tammy says, or as they grow their spot dosnt grow with them so it looks smaller, but it wont dissapear

Re: That Spot
Glad I got that mix up cleared up. Now I can set my information straight.

I thought Whizzbit was white? Tammy's site says platinum Robos "will appear very similar to [white faced Robos] at weaning age but they are slightly lighter again. The main difference between a Platinum Roborovski and a White - Faced Roborovski is that Platinum Roborovskis fade with age. At approx. 12 months old they are grey and by the time they reach 18 - 24 months old they are usually pure white and can then sometimes be confused with the Pure White Roborovski." Who actually names the colours, anyway?
But yes, Charlotte is a head spot, not a platinum

Re: That Spot
Hi Kissa,
the names are usually given by the people who discover the mutations and in the case of robos most mutations have been discovered in other countries so have names relevant to their languages.
With a lot of the mutations on my website i have tried to either use the original names or translate them, but sometimes i have just given them a more suitable name which explains it better and more easier in English.
The actual name of 'Platinum' is an original name given by the people in mainland Europe and it is used by my friend Nella from The Netherlands who has been a valuable resource in researching and exchanging robos with me, so that is where that name came from. It may not be very clear on my website but the main differences between Platinum and White (from White Faced lines) is that Platinums are born White Faced but fade to white, whereas Whites are white from birth.
With the 'Head Spot' robos i have heard them called this but also more commonly 'Snow Bears' which i dont think describes them accurately at all, so i only refer to them as 'Head Spot' robos, which i think describes them perfectly
With the two White Faced genes i did take it upon myself to separate them and give them different names by using the two already known names for them. I now use White - Faced for the Dominant version of the gene as i think it describes them perfectly, as they are Agouti with a White Face! I use 'Husky' for the recessive gene as i think it more accurately describes the recessive white faced as they do have an all over husky tone to them due to them being slightly faded compared to pure agoutis.
The name 'Caramel' for the Red Eyed Robos was all me! i really think this describes them perfectly.
Obviously other people will have different opinions, but my main aim is to help with the research of robos and to help people understand them, and part of this for me is to help people to recognise the differences as easy as possible and i believe i am doing this y using names which describe them properly

Re: That Spot
Snow bears? Head spot makes much more sense.
(On a related note, with the two different white colours (the ones from white faced genes with the grey undercoat vs the ones from pied genes without the undercoat) -- do they have separate names, or are they both just "white"?)

Re: That Spot
I have just been calling them White and Pure White but obviously that doesnt really distinguish between them properly and could easily be confused, but i am thinking of referring to one of them as Black Eyed White like in Chinese Hamsters but to be honest that isnt too good either due to both of them having Black Eyes!
I havent yet update my website with the second White, but hoping to do so soon, so will have to have a good think about accurate names for them
On Pedigrees it will be easier as obviously the Ped will say 'White' but just by looking through the family you can see if they are from White Faced or Pied lines.
I really hope people keep the two Whites seperate though - imagine the mess we will be in if a White has both White Faced and Pied in it's background!!
