Those pesky robo nails
I took a few weeks off from checking up on Dora and Leela's nails (what with the move and everything), and today I had a proper bath session with Leela when I noticed just how long her nails got. They are ridiculously long... All curved in different directions It's been over a month since the last trim, so this is what I get. Tomorrow I'm going to our old place and bringing manicure scissors back for some serious trimming!
I'm just sooo thankful I don't have this problem with Lucy, because I have no idea how I'd be able to trim hers. And of course the trimming is totally counterproductive to taming too.

Re: Those pesky robo nails
Mine are like that, but mine are campbells. I put very fine sandpaper in their wheel every now and then to keep them down now. I'd love to know how you manage to keep robo's still enough to trim them!! It's just out of the question with my little runners

Re: Those pesky robo nails
Some of mine get bad nails (mainly Treo and Squirt)
Luckily Treo is fine with me trimming them, I haven't even tried trimming Squirts, he hardly lets me hold him without nipping!
Hoping the ceramic plate I put under his food bowl will help
Best of luck with your nail trimming session x

Re: Those pesky robo nails
The rats have a sandpaper insert in their wodent wheel every now and again to keep their nails down I find they keep themselves down that way.

Re: Those pesky robo nails
I'm really not sure what to give my robos to help with their nails. They have porous rocks, and they spend a lot of time running through their sand baths. Leela runs on both of her wheels ALL the time she's awake. I think it's just some physical change that happened when they got older--nails used to not be a problem until they were about 5 months old.
It's actually fairly easy to get theirs trimmed because they are so small. I can hold a hamster entirely in my left hand and trim with my right hand. I wrap my palm around their back and hold my thumb along their stomach. My index finger sort of wraps around their eyes a bit (it helps if it's dark, they stay still). Leela's great about it--I can get all her nails very fast as she doesn't squiggle around much. Dora gives me a lot of trouble It's very opposite of their personalities otherwise.
I couldn't do that with Lucy because she's much bigger and stronger. I'd need someone else to hold her, I think, which I'd be afraid of (either someone else holding her improperly or cutting her nails improperly).
P.S.: Trimmed Leela's nails last night. So long! Dora's to do tonight.

Awww well at least you don't have to go to the vets so you're pretty lucky. I'm too scared of chopping a tiny toe off!

Re: Those pesky robo nails
Ah, I don't clip unless a foot is still. I actually use tiny curved manicure scissors, so I can't cut really cut farther than I want. I position one open scissor blade under the nails, and when I'm sure a foot is steady, I cut really quickly. Because the scissors are so small, it's a fairly precise job. What I do is I don't cut too short, just in case. I do a "good enough" trim , whereas a vet could potentially cut a lot closer.

Re: Those pesky robo nails
I trim my robo's nails occasionally. I only do it when their nails are really absurdly long or if they show some signs of breaking or being a nuisance to them. I'm in nursing school so I have a variety of bandage scissors, including a really petite pair of scissors that are slightly curved so they point away from the little robo's faces and bodies
I have to do it when they're still drowsy from sleep though, otherwise they are too twitchy

Re: Those pesky robo nails
As you know Hamtastic I'm always doing mine too, nothing I have ever given my pompoms has made the slightest difference to their nails.
Except The Cloud of course, he was a different case all together
