Question Keeping Roborovski Colonies

Hey,
i know there are threads about this, but i just want as much info as possible..
I know keeping a colony can be very risky, so i have a few Qs (for a colony of 4)
-Do males/females do better in colonies or doesnt it matter?
-would 4 wheels be needed? or just 2 or 3? hehe 4 6.5'' wheels would um take up a lot of room
-would a zoozone 2 be ok?
-what is the likelihood of fallouts/staying together?
-introducing them.. im thinking 2 pairs being introduced through a glass/mesh divider in the cage (zoozone 2 i guess) then after a few days (or weeks, i dont know) remove the divider?
Thankyouu x

Default Re: Keeping Roborovski Colonies

I've never kept a long term colony, but I did house four together for just over a month when I did my last lot of breeding. I had put Dasher and Whizzbit together as they were staying here, and then their two brothers were together no problems. I then put the two boys from the second litter in with them when they needed to be separated from mum.

It's a bit different as mine were very young, and the fights aren't so much of a problem till they're a little older. What it did do was upset the older two who up to that point had lived in harmony. It seemed that mini The Cloud felt the need to reassert his dominance so he attacked Digger and gave him a big wound on the bum. The two little ones weren't seen as a threat and settled in no problems. It did all settle down again though, but they did leave me very shortly afterwards so I don't know what would have happened when the two youngsters hit maturity, got their scent marks ect. I imagine another battle for dominance could well have occurred if one of the little ones was a dominant type hamster.

I only actually had three wheels as Loon wasn't a wheeler at all, and was named Loon as he did figure of eights around the cage at top speed the whole time. I think if you have four hams you'd be best to have four wheels to minimize the risk of fighting. A ZZ2 should be fine if your hams want to live together.

I haven't experienced any difference in the sexes for fallouts, it really does depend on the individual hams. You could do everything by the book and still have problems, of you could be fine. Obviously you need to be ready to house up to four individual robos absolute worst case scenario.
