Oh bless them, so tiddly! They do look a tiny bit scruffy round the back there, have they been jumping ov er the water bowl? Mine do occasionally if they're on a zoom about.

You can only do your best is the honest answer, and if you do everything you can and they still can't stay together it is not your fault and you mustn't feel bad at all.

In first pair I had one robo (The Cloud) that in absolutely no way shape or form was going to live with another no matter what, this happens sometimes. my current pair are eight months now and perfectly happy, hopefully they will remain so.

So to give them the best chance, go with the following.

Enough space for plenty of zipping about, but not too much space that with only two thay might freak out a bit.

Two Wheels/saucers

Two sand pits

Scattered food not bowl

Break your mineral block in half

Open nest

Two water bottles bowls - if needed although this doesn't tend to be a fighting point so much.

Untill they are completely settled, no tubes, tunnels ect that one could claim as territory

Nothing that one can get cornered in by the other so if you do have anything covered, have two entrances/exits - I would advise against anything like this if there is any sign of trouble anyway.

Mine have all two of everything still, but they do have covered areas ect as they are fine, I would whip them out at the first sign of trouble though believe me!

also its advised not to have levels for them to get territorial over

however despite all of these things they can still fall out over nothing and might need to be separated, or they could live in the worst cage in the world and get on fine.. its just safer to do them :P

My advice for keeping multiple hams together is that you:

-have two wheels (or saucers, though I prefer wheel myself) big enough that they can both run together if they want.
-have a large food dish that they can both sit in or that you scatter feed them
-have multiple beds/houses. This lets them get some 'personal space', lets them sleep a part if they wish, lets them feel secure in a bed should they choose to use them and if something should happen and you aren't around- it gives them a place to hide from the other.
-usually one water bottle is fine, but if they seem to argue over it then another should be added
-plenty of toys and stuff for them to do (though that's for any hamster alone or together )
-a large enough cage so that they don't become territorial over a small space. I recommend at least 2322.6 square cm.

Congrats they are sweeties!

- don't wash toys/wheels on the same day as the cage
- Remove anything that starts fights or you notice more fights happening when its in the cage
- add new things one at a time

they do look very scraggley, I can see droplets of water on the dish where they took a splash? lol

And can I ask fluffymunchkins why you don't wash the toys on the same day as the cage?

And sand is great! Best is play sand, you have to bake it in the oven for about an hour to dry it out

I have a silly picture of my three boys all trying to run on one flying saucer here, I think they are fab wheels

This thread is really interesting... I'm looking at dwarves in the future and will definitely keep these tips in mind. Just a few questions I've though of to do with wheel...
- would both wheels have to be the same size?
- do both wheel have to be the same type (ie having a normal and a saucer)?

Just because I thought maybe having one big enough for both and one that is small enough for one...

Shazza- I would guess that maybe the reason you clean the toys and the cage on different days is maybe to still keep their smell on something... By the time you clean the toys their smell is in the cage and vice versa (not sure though, only a guess)

If you wash both the toys and the cage it makes the cage completely neutral smelling, so it could start squabbles as they both try to re-establish the area. By leaving the toys they have familar scents in the cage already. So I wash the cage on one day (with partly old bedding) then wash the wheels and plastic toys the next day
