Re: The inevitable happened....
Keeping them in even group numbers definately helps. But overall, it never lasts forever lol x

Re: The inevitable happened....
I don't know about smells. I think maybe people just don't clean their cages if they say that girls smell. Or give them sand baths to soak oils from their fur. I can't smell anything from their cage until I put my head very close to it. And I have a good sense of smell. I clean their cages completely every 2 weeks and spot clean periodically, re-filling sand. By the 14th day, I can smell something, but again, only very close to the cage.
P.S.: I've heard about the smell of female mice and syrians in heat though.

Re: The inevitable happened....
I agree they probably didn't clean them out enough!
Fred has a lovely smell to him, I find using different bedding stops smell,
I use hemp bedding currently the difference to shavings is defiantly noticeable
I'm thinking either corner loos for sand or a cat litter tray one end.
$hAzZa I love the names of your 3 boys, am I right in saying green day?

Re: The inevitable happened....
My boys are quite smelly and I clean them weekly. Male rats are also whiffy too but I'm pretty desensitized to it compared to my parents lol
Sand baths are great and using terracotta dishes help keep nails trim when digging. Is it Hamtastic that showed me different coloured ones you can buy?
How big is your cat litter tray? I would of thought it would be too big to get in the cage lol
And yes, Green Day!! But now they've spilt and no chance of re-grouping XD

Re: The inevitable happened....
I find my girls can be really smelly at times, I think its mostly when they are in heat but they really do stink the room out every now and then My boys dont ever smell they just poop eeeeeeverywhere :L
Also (from my experience) boys seem to get along much better than girls. This is why I am hoping for another pair of boys when I get my next set of robo pups in a couple of weeks. I just cant deal with separating another pair!
Glad you got Tre out when you did, I hope Mike and BJ will be much happier and I bet Tre is loving a cage to himself, maybe that was his plan all along

Re: The inevitable happened....
Yeah, I did I have 2 glazed ceramic plant saucers and now need to get one more for Leela
My girls are definitely smelly if I sniff them directly. Basically no room smell, but if your stick your nose very near the cage, you can smell the bedding. It's also in part due to me using Carefresh. I find it actually smells worse than shavings for the first week, but I don't like the texture or dustiness of shavings. The cages smell quite nice when I use aspen.

I think your right! But his plan backfired when he realised he'll be living the rest of his days in a PINK ZZ1 x
