Talking Hey! First time Dwarf mommy...

Hey,
This is my first post in about 4 years .....
I got my first Russian Dwarf hamster from pets at home 2 days ago, I've always had Syrians in the past.
She's about 2-3 months old as she was in the pets at home rescue area!
There are going to be a lot of questions from me in the next couple of days as I am obviously not used to his type of hammy, also it's been nearly 3 years since Fudge my last Syrian died so got to get back into the swing of being a hammy mommy, I have done my research on Russian dwarfs but asking a person is a lot better than Google sometimes
I believe she is a Cambell not a WE, she has yet to be named as well... so suggestions would be appreciated

Gem x

Hi and welcome back to HC! I'm sorry about the passing of Fudge. I'm glad that this little hamster sweetheart has found her way into your heart and life. I hope that the two of you have many wonderful years together and create lots of great memories. If you tell us about her personality and/or share some pics of your darling, I'm sure that you will have plenty of name suggestions. I often have a few choice names based on their personality or appearance and then let my pet make the final choice by playing a game with them.

Hi and welcome back to HC.
Congratulations on your first dwarf ham. So looking forward to meeting her.
Sorry to hear about your syrian ham Fudge.
Cypher is the Queen of dwarf hams and knows everything about them.

Welcome back & congrats on your first little Russian

Look forward to hearing more about her as she settles in.
She will be a hybrid, a cross between Campbell's & WW as all pet shop Russian hams are although some may look more like one species or the other they are all hybrids.
Russians do need a different diet to Syrians so you would do best to buy a dwarf specific mix if you haven't already, there are only really two good ones, Burgess dwarf hamster harvest which is a good mix but lacks variety & Bunny Dwarf HamsterDream Expert from Zooplus which is also good & has more variety.
They can be prone to diabetes so avoid any sugary treats (including ones with honey) & even naturally sweet foods, a tiny bit of fruit once in a while as a rare treat is ok but best to stick with veg mostly.
Most Russians go crazy for mealworms so they make a good taming treat & are a useful protein boost for them although high in fat so not too many!
What cage do you have? They do need quite a bit of space but not too open, lots of little hideouts, tunnels etc & toys to keep them occupied.
They often love to dig & burrow too so plenty of deep substrate.
Unlike Syrians it is important to have a sand bath in the cage at all times too.

Hey Thanks,
Not sure how to load images if you guys can tell me how that would be marvellous
She's creamy white in colour, I'm not 100% sure on her personality yet as she's very quiet, she squeaks in her sleep and went on her wheel the first time this morning at 5am (nice wake-up call!), she is very skitty at times (possible name) but then she has fallen asleep in her clear tube which sticks out of the cage and she will just sit there quite content...

I had heard about the cross between the Campbell's and WW's, I have specific Dwarf hamster food not sure what it is as I ripped the bag when I opened it and some of it went over the floor so had to transfer the food into a tub I'm not the most co-ordinated person aha
I have a Pets at home Large plastic cage which I had Fudge in, I still need to get a sand bath in there for her as I never had one with my Syrians in the past,
I have tried to give her treats but she hits it out of my fingers and then will have it later, she wont even take it of me threw the bars (thought I'd try), I will get mealworms and see if that's what she prefers or if she just wants to bite me... I have noticed I am a bit scared of her at the moment as Fudge my last hammy I loved but she was very aggressive to the point she would dangle of my finger and not let go, I have tamed 3 other hamsters in the past so we shall see!

There's a thread here that shows you how to upload photos.

Try not to be scared of her biting, it's very early days & she'll still be adjusting to her new home so just go slow with her & I'm sure she'll be fine, they do tend to nibble a bit at first but that's not really biting more exploring!
Once she's settled you might find it easier to tame her in the play pen, they're often less inclined to bite out of the cage.
I'm not sure of the size of the P@H cages, I think they're quite small but get as much depth of substrate & hideouts things like cardboard tubes, egg boxes & things for her & she should be happy, she'll love the sand bath when you can get some chinchilla sand too.
They do often squeak in their sleep, I find it quite endearing

She's gorgeous

I'm afraid most of those treats are unsuitable as they will be too sweet for her, the little hearts are fine but not yogurt drops which are usually mostly sugar & fat so not good for any ham really, I don't know what the yellow packet is but it doesn't look healthy of appropriate for hybrid. The treat stick may also contain honey which isn't good either.
You can get some rosewood boredom breakers treat sticks which contain no sugar or honey which are fine to use.
Try to keep treats as natural as possible, things like the mealworms, sunflower seeds (in the shell) pumpkin seeds, hemp & flax seeds, the occasional tiny piece of nut or a monkey nut, all in moderation, they usually love millet sprays too, you may have to look in the bird section of pet shops for those.

Ok cool,
Thought it was best for me to put the treats picture up as i need to re learn my hamster care for her and pet shops don't always give the best advice, which is why i wanted to do this post as i want her to be happy and healthy!
When i get home i will remove the stick and no yogurt drops! The popcorn doesn't have sugar... but will do more research on them before/if i give her anymore.
Will get all those natural treats for her, especially the millet spray i used to give that to my Syrians.
I gave her some carrot before i left for work which she was very excited about!

Welcome back, I'm also a first time owner of a Dwarf Hamster, though Winter White (Hybrid).

cypher is really the Dwarf whisperer, I'm not exactly sure but please ask Cypher. There's a Yogurt Drops sugar free from Vitakraft, if your Hamster ever loved Yogurt Drops, I suppose you can try the sugar-free variant but please ask others as I'm not too informed of Dwarf Hamster food/treats.

The cage you have seems to be the Ferplast Duna Fun (Pets at Home variant). It seems like a good cage, but if your Hamster ever tries to gnaw on the bar or certain parts of plastic. Then I suggest getting a larger cage.
