Hey everyone, just a quick update about Loki.
About a week ago I noticed he was quite smelly, after cleaning his house I found out he started peeing in it, I thought it is just a momentary thing, but two days ago I checked the house again, put some of the spoiled bedding in a corner outside but nothing has changed. Moreover, the last two evenings, Loki has been running around his cage like crazy, yesterday he was in his wheel from 9pm to midnight, which is very unusual, he usually went outside in the night when the lights where off. I also noticed he took little breaks and was scratching himself I decided to weight him and he has gained 10 g! The only new thing I did is I gave him mealworms but not more that 1 every other day or so. So I have gotten pretty worried, I'm taking him to the vet right now wish me luck

Good luck at the vet, hope it's nothing too serious.

The vet visit was fine! He gave me some kind of spray for the scratching I observed and said that Loki is not fat (I was worried hah ) and I shouldn't be worried, he might be going crazy because he wants to mate. I was also relieved because he charged me 300 CZK for both examination and the spray (that's approx 15 dollars?). If Loki seems unsettled even after this I should come and get a blood test done, but hopefully he will be back to normals soon

I've never heard of a male ham going crazy because it wanted to mate unless theirs a female very close by so I doubt very much that has anything to do with it.
Can't say I've ever heard of sprays being used on hamsters before either, do you know what it is?
He might just have been upset due the house cleaning, the can get quite agitated by cleaning so it might be an idea to try to get him to use a litter tray with some sand in, either close by his nest or if he has a big house inside so you don't have to destroy the nest when you spot clean.

Yes, its calles Bio Kill 2,5 mg/l and it says on the bottle it can be used on hamsters
I will move the sand bath closer to the home and it could solve it as well. I have been spot cleaning the cage, so now he doesnt have to to suffer from me cleaning it too often.
Well, I cant speak for the vet, thats what he told me, I will keep an eye on Loki for sure though.

Never come across that before, I looked it up though & see it is used for mites (among other things like ticks & fleas which hamsters don't get?!) hams are usually given drops or injections for mites, I would be wary of spraying a hamster or the cage with anything.
He may not even have mites, just scratching a bit more than usual could be down to more scent marking due to cleaning or other things causing a bit of irritation.
Signs of mites are most often first seen around the eyes & ears, if he just scratches a bit more generally then personally I'd wouldn't be in a rush to treat for mites.
Hopefully moving the sand will help with him peeing in his house, they can get a bit lazy sometimes so having it closer might help!
