Default Russian questions

I have had my Russian Pancake for about 6 weeks now. We absolutely adore him and he makes us laugh every day. Just a couple of question for the experienced Russian owners.

How do I train him to wee in the same spot? Currently he just wees in his bedroom which is a bit annoying. Is there any way to get him to use a particular spot? I put a very shallow sand bath in thinking he would use that but doesn’t (he has another deeper one he bathes in when he’s out).

When he is out on the sofa with hubby and me he is frantic running round and trying to dig between the cushions to get inside the sofa, or trying to escape and get on to the floor. We have a blanket down between us for him to burrow in, and we have the lights and tv down, but he still seems intent on escaping. (Until he tires himself out and falls asleep under his blanket. Will he ever just chill on our laps/in our hand?!

Thanks in advance!

I can't call my self an experienced Russian owner, however, I can give my best to answer your questions from what I have learnt!

There isn't any one way that will ensure Pancake wees in a particular spot. Some hamsters, however hard you try to litter train them, will just use the toilet wherever they please!! It might be worth trying to move some of the pee soaked bedding from his bedroom into the sand bath, the scent of his pee might make him pee there instead. I have tried this with several hamsters and I find generally it works!

Again, this is so variable depending on each hamster's personality. For example, I have had hamsters that will cuddle up and fall asleep in my hands, and I have had hamsters that are too interested in their environment to want to relax or rest on me! Your sofa will be full of new smells and curiosities that will change for Pancake every time you put him there, so he may just be too excited by what's around him to really chill out. Who knows!

Good luck with the litter training attempts!

How big is Pancake's house? If it's large enough you could try putting a small dish with some sand in the spot where he pees if not put the current dish really close to his entrance & put some peed on substrate there to see if that will encourage him to use it.
What substrate do you use? My current Russian doesn't like to pee in the sand in the corner dish in his house unlike my others, he just piles fitch on top & pees on that!
If you have something really absorbent in the house like fitch & shredded tissue then peeing in the house shouldn't be a real problem, just spot clean every couple of days, they don't pee much anyway so it takes a while to build up.

Pancake is still very young, cuddles may come later, the sofa may not be the best place for him, I would try making a playpen with toys & a wheel where he can enjoy active out of cage time & you can interact with him, as he gets older & more & more comfortable with being handled he may become more of a cuddly ham but they all have their own personalities & some don't really enjoy cuddling so much as others.

I have had 1 Russian dwarf hamster before and have two Russian dwarf hamsters currently (and a robo hamster).

My older Russian dwarf is now about 6 months old. She will now sit still for longer. My young Russian dwarf who is about 10 weeks old is still eager to be running about and exploring.

Hopefully with practice, your hamster will calm down and enjoy being held and stroked more.
