Default Please help me! Two dwarf hamsters.

We have two dwarf hamsters, both males, called Luigi and Mario.

They're only recently purchased and incredibly skittish. As soon as we go near them they hide. (we got them last Sunday, it's now Saturday)

We tried to feed them treats but they saw us, squeaked and hid back in their house! Do we lift the house? We rubbed our scents on one of their toys. They don't even come out when we're far from the cage.

Secondly, we keep hearing squeaking. They could be squeaking at us being in the room.

I'm really sad that they're not liking us and not sure how to remedy the situation.

The squeaking could be fighting. A lot of hamster pairs end up needing to live on their own as they get older.

They will be fine living separately after adjusting.

You haven't had them long so they are still settling in. Put toilet paper up your sleeve for a few hours then tear it into strips and put them in the cage. The hamsters can then get used to your scent.

You can sit by the cage and talk to them to get the used to your voice (even if they are hiding).

Having them in separate cages can also make taming easier.

CMB offered good advice.

I love the names, I was just playing Super Mario Bros wii edition today lol

Don't lose hope in taming, it took me several weeks for my two robos to be comfortable enough to even sniff my hand. I don't advise lifting their house, if you do this they may get the idea that you are a predator. Remember, the hamsters have to come to you, not the other way around

I thought my hamsters hated me before I could tame them but they were just scared and skittish. I wouldn't worry that your hamsters hate you until six months have passed and you still can't tame them

The squeaking very well could be fighting, monitor them when they come out if you can to see if they fight. I had to separate my pair of robos due to them majorly fighting in the middle of the night. The sooner you can catch them falling out the better. If you wait too long they could injure or possibly kill each other in the middle of the night. Don't mean to put any scary images in your head, just be aware of the risks. It's a good idea to have an exotic vet or an emergency exotic vet that you can go to at a moment's notice if your hamsters suddenly fell out and hurt each other.

Good luck and if you have more questions just ask

Which species do you have Betbot? If they are robos they an take a lot of time & patience to tame, Russians are a lot easier but will still need time to settle.
Just moving to a new home is very stressful for them so give them time to settle but the stress can be enough to cause them to fall out so if the squeaking doesn't stop you may need to separate them fairly quickly so do make sure you have a second cage ready.
I agree that just sitting by the cage & quietly talking to them is best, don't worry about interacting with them for now, you need to be able to observe them in case they have been fighting so it may take patience!
Unless absolutely necessary don't remove the house or dig around trying to get them out, if you do think they are fighting you may have to do that but it will scare them so avoid doing that if you possibly can.

Hi Betbot and welcome to the forum.
Congratulations on your 2 dwarfs.
I agree with Cypher, they need time to settle, adjust and mark their new home. Be sure to keep an eye on any fighting.

Definitely look out for any squabbling, bullying, fighting or injuries if they are squeaking. Sometimes a change of environment (eg the move to you) can make them fall out. If they do start fighting they can kill each other. It would be an idea to have another cage handy or a large plastic storage bin you could make into a bin cage later, just in case. Otherwise it's usually recommended to leave them alone to settle in for the first 2 or 3 days, then start taming
