Re: Baby Dakota
Well I've had Dakota for about 4 mo now & I tested her today for diabetes and she was reading the lowest level but still showing some higher glucose in her urine.
She had been peeing in her house, sleeping in it. I never had a hammy that did this so I didn't know. I put white bedding in her cage so I saw a sever amount of urine in her nest where she has been sleeping.
So I sterilized everything except her sand. Now she has clean sand too after seeing her scratch herself & 3-4 black fruit fly-type bugs. I'm hoping they just will die off now that its clean? I never saw bugs before tonight in her cage. I sterilized her cage 2 days ago. She doesn't have any missing fur, no bald patches
Forgot to mention that she smells real strong, always has?

Re: Baby Dakota
Update: she has been up alot so I got to put her in a bin & clean her house again, replace surrounding bedding with white Carefresh. Dakota also cleaned herself in the fresh sand. Didn't see any more bugs tonight. The sand will probably be the answer, to clean her fur.

Re: Baby Dakota
I wouldn't worry about sterilising things, over cleaning is just going to stress her out, spot clean as normal but just a bit more frequently if she pees more.
The fruit fly type things will be attracted by the sugar in the urine.

Re: Baby Dakota
Thanks Cypher, she has me cleaning my apartment real good now. A deeper cleaning. That's interesting to know about the sugar & the fruit flys. Not happy about it, they better be gone now. I hate any kind of bug.

Re: Baby Dakota
Update: I cleaned 3 hamster cages one right after the other, it took me a couple hours. It's a good feeling having all their wheels & cages cleaned. Only saw 2 fruit flies tonight. So bleach goes down the drains again & I pretty much cleaned all day. Tomorrow I plan on cleaning & organizing more.
I'll just have to clean Dakota 's cage more often, maybe every 2-3 weeks. Check her nest every few days. She is clean from the sand & seems happy. With 7 hammies it has to be real clean in here.
I moved Dakota to the other side of the room just to play it safe although I believe she is bug free now.

Re: Baby Dakota
Hopefully the bug problem is gone soon. A cage cleaning schedule would be good with all those cages to clean.

Re: Baby Dakota
The fruit flies are gone. I checked her nest while she was out distracted by a Gerber puff. She is all clean & fluffy from the fresh sand.
I have everybody on a 5 week cleaning schedule put into my phone. However this time they got cleaned a little early. Maybe 4 weeks would be better, will have to monitor that.
I'll be cleaning Dakota 's cage probably every 3 weeks. Especially during the summer months it's good to keep everything clean to keep bugs away.

Re: Baby Dakota
I wouldn't give her things like gerber puffs is she's diabetic CB, keep her diet sugar free.

Re: Baby Dakota
Thanks Lizzy & Cypher, I'm extremely glad they are gone too! I hate any kind of bug, flying, creeping, crawling, spiders, bees, ladybugs, etc.
Cypher, I did read the back of the bottle but thought sugar amount was so little that it wouldn't matter, but I will stop giving her the Gerber puffs now that you let me know
