I believe in that, too. She is making headway in the process, and I am so glad to hear it.

I'm sure she'll become fully tame

In my experience, Russians can take a while to tame but once they're tame, they're absolute angels. My Stephano is so tame that he'll lick my hand, and my old WW used to actually wash my fingers

I hope for a tame happy too, even though it is taking awhile. Lilyanna is in the same boat as Dakota, I have to get the nippiness out of her too. I can hold her in my hand at times than at other times she's bitey. I have some work cut out for me and them being both very nocturnal makes things harder.

Thanks Cotton, I noticed something else...
When I interact with hammys at night (middle of night) they don't bite so much. During the day they are tired and bitey cause they just want to get some food & water & go back to sleep. Wonder if there is any truth to that?

That makes sense. If someone was getting in the way of my food, sleep and water, I might want to bite.

Update: Both Dakota and Lilyanna are biters in their cage. Will see about play bin time & see how they do with that. It's ok if I can't handle them, not the end of the world

Hamsters are known to be most active at night, during the day they like to save their energy by sleeping, eating & drinking.

She bit me in the middle of the night. So it's either cage agressive or she's a bitey hamster. I know I was a foreign invader in her home & she felt the need to protect her home.

I might not tame them at all. Easier just to spoil them with attention & healthy treats like millet, is what I gave them last night. They should trust me by now but I think it's in their genetic make up to bite. I believe this this to be true right from birth. Since Dakota wasn't from a pet shop the whole litter was aggressive.

I know not everyone agrees with me. Lilyanna has a chance to be tamed but Dakota is friendly as long as I don't get too close. No use banging my head against the wall trying to tame them, when it may not make any difference. I guess that it doesn't bother me if they are tame or not...

Edit: Chloe is a biter & no matter what I did it didn't work. So that's why I'm not going to take the taming process faster. The biggest problem is that I'm 1/2 asleep when trying to tame them at 2:00am. So it is what it is.

Why don't you have a nap a bit earlier, then wake up to be with the hamsters.

Just take taming slow, you will get there. Russians do grow out of nipping. Jasper had a phase of nipping in the summer, he started once I got back from holiday. I think it was a combination of stress and being away from me. He did grow out of it after a few weeks. Whenever he nipped me, I was just hold him for a bit longer, then put him back, so he wouldn't associate nipping with anything other than no treats.

Most hamsters will be territorial in their cage, so find a way to transport Dakota out and put her in a taming bin or something. Leave it quite basic and just hand feed treats from there and work through the taming process. I found an old ice-cream tub with a bit of bedding worked well with Jasper.

They may be bitier in the day because they are crepuscular, meaning they are most active at dawn and dusk. They probably just want their food and then to go back to bed.
