Aww hope she enjoys her new wheel . I would love a Silent Runner but I can't fit more than an 8 inch wheel in Larry-Jasper's cage .

I had to work on that wheel cause the bearings take a beating & need to be replaced. It happened with both my wheels. So I'm hammering away trying to get the bearings out. Finally got the wheel to work after putting the bearings in backwards.

She seems to really like the wheel.

Too bad it won't fit, an 8 in wheel is nice size too

Aww CB, you can't say no when it comes to hammies, congratulations on Zoey - I love that name and she's so beautiful.
You have a truly wonderful hamily!

Thanks TL, actually thought I'd name her Zoey but then changed my mind and settled on Ivy Rose

I just called the pet store that Ivy came from & they said this was the first they ever heard about diabetes. I said that black & white one on the sales floor probably has it too, as she was drinking 5 min straight, even with us squeezing the bottle making sure the water was coming out

The girl said that she's going to talk to the manager to see about giving me supplies to help take care of her, like bedding, that would be nice.

I ordered her 2 bags of Burgess today, I ordered 3 yesterday but Violet cancelled my order cause it said that I'm going to pick it up at the warehouse in the UK

The 2 bags cost $30 including shipping, coming from 2 different sellers. Thanks to Amity for your links for Burgess food

I tried relentlessly to get Ivy litter trained after my Kaytee sand bath potty training didn't work. She peed in the litter 1x then it was back to the bedding in the same general area near her house. No matter where I put the litter or even putting wet bedding in it, she wouldn't use it. That would have saved me a lot of grief with her soaking the bedding peeing almost every 15 min during the day. I grab a handful of wet bedding from today.

On top of that she is deaf, so to get her attention I have to put things in front of her nose. Latte, my elderly robo is deaf too, think I said that on another thread, sounds familiar.

Any idea on how to get her litter trained? I'm using the littler tray with entrance and exit holes, size for dwarf hamsters. With a 1/2 in of potty litter. She must be stubborn or something. I really tried today. She went way out of her way to not use it. Peeing in strange places just to avoid the little tray. That's too bad. So I backed off and it's just sitting in her cage and she continues to pee by it but not in it.

The pet store is giving me a $15 store credit for her ill health plus a vet voucher. I'll get her skin scraped for $20 to check for parasites. The rest of the visit is free. She does some itching but nothing alarming. What a gift she is turning out to be. I was stressed about it today. Thought about taking her back to the pet store but she would have a terrible life most likely if I returned her.

So I'm going to try to take care of her. She doesn't look sickly at this point as she is still young but I expect that to change in 6 mo from now. Every Russian I've owned, except Chloe, has had diabetes. How is that possible?

I called the vet and the vet said to take her back and get a healthy pet. Don't think I can do that though. The store has a 14 day return policy which they are extending that to a month for me in this case. Frustrating

Maybe a ceramic bowl instead? She might be more willing to use something like that rather than a very enclosed(and quite small)litter tray/sand bath.

I know Petsmart have some triangle shaped ceramic bowls that would be a decent size for a dwarf sand bath or litter tray, but they are a bit expensive and you might not find them as they are getting clearanced out and might not come back

I would try something different, some hams really like those enclosed litter trays but others don't & it doesn't sound as though she does, I've always found they prefer sand to the litter pellets tbh but it may just be that if she is drinking that much & peeing that often she won't always go in the same place.
If she has a large enough house try putting a small dish of sand in there.

Just noticed you mentioned potty litter Those potty litters from a pet store are not safe. The safest you'd manage would be Yesterday's News cat litter or a high quality Chinchilla sand(which you would not find)and the cat litter would certainly not be the best option. It's very big for hamsters, especially dwarf hamsters, and could deter them from using the litter tray.

The reason for the potty litter from pet stores being unsafe is they're made from unsafe minerals, clay, etc. These things are not safe for hamsters or any other pet for that matter.

Sterilized play sand ends up considerably cheaper than high quality Chinchilla sand(which would need online ordering and would cost far more for a tiny fraction of product let alone shipping and importation costs).I know Kaytee make a bath sand but it costs twice or more of what you'd pay for play sand and is near impossible to find, making it not worth putting in so much effort and way more money than necessary into getting.

I tried the Chinchilla sand, she rolls in it and seems to really enjoy it but not use is for a potty. I tried that before the litter tray. I put wet bedding in the chinchilla sand and still it didn't work.

It seems that she knows what I want her to do but she doesn't want to cooperate. Now she's sleeping behind the wheel today so who knows where she'll pee today? That same spot between the little tray and her house is very wet right now again. I hate to take the littler tray out if it is forcing her to pee in a handful of bedding instead of all over the place near the left front of the cage.

It is taking up room in her cage but it will save me money on bedding if she only pees there.

Yes, Cypher every 15 min all day long. Drink, eat & pee. I know she wouldn't have as good of life but is this something that I want to take on? I ordered her a bag of Burgess but I could always feed that to the Chinese hammies.
