Default Meet My Two Hammies

Hi! I'm new here, I only joined a couple of minutes ago.

I would like to introduce my two hamsters.

First, there's Chestnut. He's about 2 years old and is an Agouti Winter White. I only got him when he was 1ish because he originally belonged to one of my friends. From what I've been told, she got him from a rescue center where he had apparently been rescued from an abandoned apartment room with no food or water. He made a speedy recovery but for however long he went on without having human interaction or food or water have clearly had affects on him. He doesn't know how to drink from a water bottle so he drinks from a bowl instead which can be very annoying because he likes to keep his bedding in there
He's also extremely protective over his food to the point where he makes a sort of hissing noise whenever anyone goes near his cage whilst he has food near. He also is prone to biting if you scare him so I always have to make myself know before stroking or picking him up. I've had him for a little over a year and I'm pleased to say he has finally accepted me enough so he won't run far away from me the second I put him down... Unlike my other hamster.

Now, Bubble is my Albino hybrid dwarf and she is soooo hyper and energetic. I swear she never sleeps. She's tame and she's never bitten me but the second I put her down she immediately tries to get away
She's about 1 now. Obviously, Bubble isn't a very hamster sort of name. The story behind Bubble's name goes like this; I was in my local pet store buying some more food for Chestnut when I came across a bunch of 'Campbells' I'd never seen before. obviously they were new. So I stood there watching them play with each other for a while before I realized one little baby was sat by itself curled up in a ball in one of the corners of the cage. So, naturally, I went to ask one of the employees about her and he just told me that she was shy. But when I saw one of the hamsters walk past and the 'shy' one ran away, the other hamster chasing after her and biting her ear. I asked my mom if I could get her and my mom said yes as long as I payed for everything. So I did and I still am but the employee wouldn't let me buy just one so I was forced to buy another little girl; Squeak. I wanted to give them matching names and I don't know what inspired me to think of it but I was thinking of food (as always) and I decided to call them Bubble and Squeak! Anyway, about 2 weeks later I noticed Bubble still cowering in the corner and Squeak would get first pick on food and toys and everything. I left it for a while, assuming they were just working out who was the dominant one. But then about another week later I walked into squeaking and crying. My two hamsters were fighting. Or more so, Squeak was attacking Bubble. I made the worst decision and decided to take Squeak out and put her in a box whilst I checked if Bubble was ok. Her stomach had a small scratch but she got up and seemed fine.

Now obviously once you've separated two hamsters there's no going back. And my mom refused to helping me out with buying a new cage. I was forced to give Squeak to one of my close friends. I still see her pretty much every other day and I still consider Squeak my baby girl but I can't help but worry I made my decision prematurely.

I also once had a Syrian when I was about 9 called Alvin. I got him for Christmas after begging for years and years. He died of old age 2 and a half years later. RIP

Thanks for reading

Hello and Welcome to HC.
It so nice to hear about your hamsters - Chestnut and Bubble sounds like you have given them both a great home.
I'm so sorry to hear that you couldn't keep Squeak but it nice that you can still see her.

Looking forward to hearing and seeing more of your hamsters,

Hi & welcome to the forum

Those are two very lovely hams you have, it's nice that you've given them both the good home & love they deserve, you made the right decision about Bubble & Squeak, it's unlikely that Bubble would ever have held her own as part of a pair & I'm sure she's much happier now so don't worry about acting prematurely, it's nice you still get to see Squeak too.

You did the right thing separating Bubble and Squeak, Bubble is obviously happier on her own. I'm just shocked that a pet shop made you buy both of the hamsters, when the one you wanted was already clearly terrified and bullied by her cage mates.

Chestnut looks like a dark golden Syrian more than a Winter white, unless that was the wrong picture put up.

What surprises me is why the pet store made you buy two. That isn't right at all. I'd complain so they stop selling animals that way. Glad they weren't seriously injured and sorry you lost squeak. Glad you can still see her sometimes tho
