Default Question about what kind of wood can be used for a D.Y.I cage

Hello, I'm a new hamster owner and wanted to make my little one a custom cage. I've done some research about woods that are safe but haven't found much on non-Ikea wood, so I decided to come to the forums for help! I recently went to Home Depot to look at what woods they had and came across douglas fir, and I was wondering if this was a safe wood to build a cage out of or if I should use solid pine or something else. Any information about safe woods to build a cage of would be very much appreciated!!

I also had a quest about which wood glue for building housing/ items like platforms would be the best to use. Thank you for taking time to read this and look forward to reading your answers!!
