Is this bin cage size suitable?
Hi, I am getting a hamster soon and I am planning on making a bin cage. I have found a plastic storage bin within my preferred budget with the dimensions H42cm L99cm W39cm (which are measured from the widest part of the box, so like the lid)
I like the length of it but I don't know if it would be too narrow, any guidance would be appreciated, thanks!
Storage bin with the dimensions:

Re: Is this bin cage size suitable?
Measuring from the widest part doesn't give you a true representation of the space your hammy would have. You need to measure the actual base or at least the point where you'll have bedding up to. Also with the height, don't forget you need to have a decent depth of substrate for burrowing

Yes I should’ve said that I’m aware of that lol, i’m going to go into the store and measure it from the base, I think a height of 42cm is okay though? I plan on making its bedding quite deep of course. Say the from the base it was l90cm and w30cm would that be sufficient for the hamster?

Re: Is this bin cage size suitable?
I have a similar bin cage for a dwarf hamster which is close to a meter long but narrow. It does work for a dwarf but would be too narrow for a Syrian hamster. I use submerged Ferplast guinea pig houses, one minus the front panel on each end as supports for the wheel etc.
I have connected a second, smaller bin cage via a tube to give my hamster the space to have an extra wheel and more toys which works well. I've done this at a later date and my hamster uses both cages.

So would it be suitable for a dwarf then? I was thinking of getting a dwarf.

I would say yes as long as you add plenty of ventilation like a meshed lid, front windows and back vents.
Bin cages don't work out cheap by the time you buy all the materials like mesh, cable ties and decorative tape plus the cost of the box.
