Default DIY kallax hamster set up question

I'm building a 2x2 kallax enclosure, and I core drilled the middle shelf so that my hamster can access from bottom to top, however instead of the nice clean piece of wood as per the tutorial, it's not solid, it's two pieces of ply with correlated card inside, and looks way too tempting to chew to leave it like that... Has anyone got any ideas of how I can fix it and make it less tempting?

I sorted it by sticking some flexible pipe around the hole
