DIY Hammock
I found this cute hanging glass ball (Photo for SAMPLE only) and hung it from slightly above ground level as a hammock for my hamster. Mine doesn't have stones or plants in it of course - it's just filled with bedding and some of her treats inside. I caught her jumping into it to explore curiously, and she was soooo adorable. I hope she likes it and goes in there more often!
The rope looks safe enough for chewing, but I hung it in a place so that she can't get at the rope even if she wanted to. It won't matter if the glass ball fell either as it's so close to ground level (with a heavy padding of substrate), and it's very very light.
P/s: Mine's a Roborovski and I got the biggest glass ball I could find, so she could fit easily. Won't recommend it for a Syrian unless you do manage to get a big enough one.

Re: DIY Hammock
These glass balls are quite thin glass and i would be far too worried that my hamster would nibble it, which he would because he always checks what something is made of.

Ooh, good point. I'm glad my hamster isn't much of a nibbler, but I'll be sure to keep her supervised. So far she hasn't been keen on nibbling it.
