Default Looking for alternative to craft sticks

I'm actually making a large house for my chinchillas, but I don't feel very safe using craft sticks due to how bad they splinter. So basically, I was hoping someone could tell me a better wood alternative to making a wood house for hamsters but in giant size.
I found this but from what I recall bamboo splinters badly as well. I was hoping that the increased thickness would help support weight and give me a few more seconds to stop them from chewing it. I'd prefer it be made from something chew-safe but I don't think I'm going to find something like long flat apple wood sticks. I do know they won't be left alone with it. But one of my girls takes BIG bites out of stuff. One bite on a new book I bought and I grabbed it immediately and a huge chunk was gone. I'm currently using cardboard boxes that I bought since the ones I get stuff shipped in are filthy. But, cardboard only takes me so far in what I can manage to make. They're both old so they aren't as active, but they get bored very easy and I thought since I need to take my mind off of grief that a project would be good for me.

I think for a strong house you would need to use solid wood pieces - eg kiln dried pine cut to size for the sides, back etc. Kiln dried solid pine is fine - it is the pine shavings that are the problem as they have a lot of shaved surface area. As long as the pine wood that is cut to size is untreated and kiln dried it would be safe.

Like this kind of thing. Even with solid wood there can be splintery edges etc so sandpaper is your friend I get a medium grade and a fine grade sheet. The medium grade is general for rough bits. The fine grade is brilliant and sands edges absolutely smooth. Only takes a few minutes

You are a life saver Serendipity. I'm going to talk to my dad about getting the wood and cutting it because he has built a lot of stuff in his life including three large cages.

My dad can make that really fast. The problem is getting him to actually DO it. I got my master procrastinating skills by genetics.
