Default Lets See Your Bin Cages!

Hello, I'm new! I'm currently building a bin cage for my Syrian hamster 'Tony'. He's not my first hamster, but he's the first one I've used a bin cage for and I'm seriously lacking inspiration. So, lets see everyone's bin cages!

Also, has anyone modified the lid of a bin that's too short for a 12" wheel to give it more height? What did you use?

TIA!

Which bin are you using? It is hard to find bins that are big enough or tall enough for a Syrian, I think the only really good size one in the UK is probably the RUB 160L trunk on wheels, although the wheel cover bits might be an issue with some hams I think it's probably tall enough for a large wheel plus substrate although I haven't tried it. I think I've seen some people cut a section out of the lid & make a mesh bit to go over the wheel but no idea how well that would work, you could make a wooden frame to go over the box in place of the lid to build it up a bit then mesh that I guess.
I've not kept a Syrian in a bin cage only Chinese which is easier with them being so much smaller! I used the RUB 145L, cut out most of the lid & meshed that & cut a panel from the front to add a large door from an old cage.

With a bin cage it does help to make some shelves, I just use a piece of wood with dowels for legs glued on with ponal, that way you can make them the size & shape you want rather than trying to buy something to fit, you can make more use of the space that way creating places to hideout under as well as a place to put things out of the substrate.

Here’s my syrian Sunflower’s old set up in the 160L(?) RUB clear trunk (100x50x50). I’ll try to get photos of his current set up with his labyrinth house and racetrack soon. I have other bin cages (wham 133l) but theyre set up for dwarf hamsters.

What are the dimensions of your bin? It sounds a little small if you cant fit a 12 inch wheel tbh.

It sounds like the height is the issue for fitting a 12" wheel. And it is hard to find bins tall enough and large enough. Are you in the US? Have a look at this link - there are some lovely bins on there! Some look very professional and use metal bolts and washers to attach the mesh, rather than cable ties.

I think it would be very difficult to extend the lid to fit a 12" wheel - and still make it safe and escape proof. So it needs a taller bin really. Or - do you actually need a 12" wheel? And 11" wheel could be fine unless it's a really large Syrian. The Silent Runner ("Runner" not "Spinner") is the most popular 12" wheel - silent and not too bulky depthwise and has a safe sturdy stand. That is 35cm tall on its stand.

The most compact 11" wheel height and depthwise, is the 27cm (11") wodent wheel - which is about 32cm tall I think.

The thing is - if the wheel fits the bin heightwise - only just, then you will need one end of the bin with very low substrate - to fit the wheel - and deeper substrate in the rest of the bin. Which means you need a good length bin to have enough of an area with a good depth of substrate. I look at it as substracting the 15cm or so length where the wheel would go at one end with low substrate - and having a further 70 to 80cm min floor space after that.

So ideally you'd be looking at a bin 90 to 100 cm long and at least 40cm deep (wide).

Not all on here are good or suitable. Someone has created a cage "topper"on a bin but I am not sure how safe or secure that is (or cheap to make!)

Thanks for all the links and pictures! I currently have a 160 litre bin. I don't have access to the exact dimensions right now but it is tall enough to allow for a 12" wheel on it's own. Just not with the depth of substrate I was planning on using.
Tbh though, it's still seems smaller than I was looking for. I'm in Canada and having a hard time finding suitable bins and an even harder time find commerical cages that have enough space. I'm thinking it might be better to build a totally DIY cage. Then I won't have issues with height or not being large enough. Especially since he's quite a large Syrian.

Has anyone done this? The only thing I'm worried about is whether or not I can make it escape proof.
