Default Easy mesh lid for a bin cage with limited tools

Hi everyone

I thought I'd share this neat DIY lid idea for a bin cage I recently had. For people who are worried about their little guys and gals escaping but don't have the tools to cut open a bin cage due to the thickness of the plastic.

You will need:
- Some Garden mesh, something like this will work, just check the spacing for your ham
- Some cable ties, these ones will do
- Some wire cutters/scissors whatever will cut your mesh

The method:
1) Create a mesh larger that the size of your bincage, in the MS Paint drawing below the back is the size of the bin cage, the green the mesh

2) Cut open the corners diagonally

3) Use the diagonal cuts to make a fitted corner

4) Bend the mesh to fit around the bin cage, you can use some clips or zip ties to make a hinge on one side

Tada! A simple bin cage lid, the sides of the bin tend to keep the corners down, or you can use some clips to keep them down!

It is an easy way to make a lid & I have done something similar as a temporary measure but you need to bear in mind that most hams could push that kind of lid off so best to weigh it down with something.
Is that plastic mesh you've used? The mesh should always be plain metal not plastic or plastic coated which can be a problem if chewed.

We chose plastic mesh to make it safer for us as we would be touching the raw edge, since it's much higher than he can reach we don't have to worry about chewing. The lid is weighed down due to the zip tie little squares hooking down, and once again he's not big enough to force his way through, we watched him for a good few hours try to escape.

This is a great idea! I’m having trouble with cutting open my emergency travel cage so will really help! But I do agree with what cypher said about it being plain metal but since it’s high up and he can’t climb I wouldn’t stress. Thanks for such a great idea!

Sasha, I went to Home Depot and asked for their assistance to help me cut through the plastic of the bin cage. They are usually very friendly and willing to help with projects if you do not have the proper tools to do it yourself. They even did it for free although I tipped them because of their kindness. Best of luck with your emergency travel cage.

That’s great dreamtree! I go to Home Depot very frequently so this will be great! I always find Home Depot to be friendly too!

I wouldn't underestimate their creativity when it comes to escaping! Unless you have an exceptionally tall bin/tank once you have the appropriate amount of substrate in with everything on top they can usually find a way to reach the lid so it's better not to risk it.
