Default detolf or kallax cage?

hello all,

im wanting to get my Syrian a upgraded cage, hes currently in an Alaska cage but feel I want to get a bigger cage for him. I don't live near ikea so if I got a detolf id have to get it delivered for an extra £35. I do however already have the 16 cube kallax unit and thinking maybe turning that into a cage instead? and would it be cheaper to turn the kallax into a cage then buying the detolf?
I know they are twice the length of the Alaska cage but would either one of them actually have more overall space then his cage hes currently in?

Here's some basic maths to see what you'd be working with floor space wise;

So the Alaska cage is 84 x 48.5 = 4,074
Deltof is 163 x 43 = 7,009
Ikea kallax cube = 42 x 42 = 1,764 (max, I don't have the inner measurements).

If you turned just one row of Kallax so 4 cubes is 7,056 at maximum size.

It's just a touch bigger than a Deltof. If you turned the whole thing on it's size, and had all the cubes as a hamster cage it would be 28,224.

I guess the biggest problem with a kallax would be the larger adjustments you'd have to do in comparison with the Detolf. With the Detolf, you'd need to just build a lid for it, it's practically a ready made hamster cage. With the kallax, if you just did a row you'd need to find a way to practically cut out those panels whilst still giving it support from below. You'd also need to give it a back panel, ventilation and also work out how to give it an entrance to the cage so you can interact and clean your ham.

If you have the space where you could turn the entire thing into a hamster cage (jesus, that would be a paradise for them) then you'd need to work out how to lid the entire thing, and also making a bottom for it.

thank you for your reply and the work out in maths. I was worried about a detolf being delivered as its glass and if I needed to move it etc so Ive decided to turn the kallax into a cage I wish I had to floor space or I would of turn the whole thing into a cage.
ill be doing a row, 4 cubes then 2 cubes underneath that also.

Bit of a project but im interested in doing a diy cage. Ive ordered some Perspex for one side viewing and other side will be made from wire/wood so has ventilation and access to clean/interact with a strip of Perspex for substrate not to fall out. hopefully it will turn out how I imagine it too.
