Default New diy bincage

Hi everyone i thought id share my newest diy bincage. I posted a thread here asking whether it was possible to do and today after a long time of pondering my options i decided to bite the bullet and get the storage boxes and make my new cage.

I started working on it at around 20 past 5 (pm) and worked non stop till around half 8 till it was done - i'm the kind of person who doesn't like to leave a job half finished so it had to be finished before i could stop.

It isnt set up yet as by the time i finished i was exhausted, had back ache and a sore wrist so i'll be setting it up tomorrow but thought id share it here whilst its empty. It measure approximately 118cm by 39cm.

Pictures:
The cage itself (with lids on)

The boxes are hot-glued along the bottom and secured together with cable ties along the sides

Close up of where the lids meet in the middle

Theres a small gap here where i can just barely fit my pinky finger (the gap is about 1 and a half cm) - i dont know whether i'll be leaving this as my hammy wont (with any luck) be reaching the lids or whether me & my dad will fix it tomorrow

I'll update this thread tomorrow with the cage all set up and Shadow-Bear exploring it

The bin cage looks great. I know you said you were contemplating whether or not to leave the lids alone. However, I would probably secure the gap so there is absolutely no way Shadow-Bear can get injured or possibly even escape through it. Hamsters are extremely resourceful and you certainly don't want to have a chance that your little one may escape. Some hamsters, including my Eros, have been known to run on the top, outside of their upright wheels. If the hamster is determined to go on an adventure, they can also leap up and over, possibly giving them access to the opening at the lid. I always opt for being extra cautious.

That looks like a spacious and overall great bin cage! I agree with dreamtree close it up to prevent injuries and escapes - better safe than sorry.

That does look good, I'm sure it's going to be much appreciated
I'd agree about the gap between the lids, I don't think it would be too hard to escape through there tbh, could you join the two with cable ties maybe?

Thanks everyone for all your comments and concerns about the lids, i would've updated this thread earlier however it has been quite a busy day with a lot of room arranging/organizing. For the lid situation i did decide to tape the gap up on the outside:

This'll just be till tomorrow where i'll probably create a hinge effect with cable ties if i can. Shadow-Bear does have quite a calm personality so the likelihood of her trying to escape is quite low.

Moving on this is the cage all set up:

When i put Shadow-Bear in she immediately explored and seemed very happy and confident in the cage zooming from one end to the other.

Here she is:

Thank you i'm glad you like it and Shadow-Bear is certainly more livelier in the cage - she burrowed around last night which she didnt do in her previous bin

Thank you, i keep going into my room just to look at the cage because i cant believe how big it is and that i made it

Update:
i went ahead and sorted the lids out when i got home today. I drilled six holes on each of the lids in a way that they were lined up so i could hook cable ties through and create a hinge.

Like so:

This way i can open one lid at a time like this:

and as the cable ties have now pulled the lids together i don't have to be worried she'll escape or injure herself.
