Ikea Detolf Lid
Hi, my Syrian keeps escaping her Ikea Detolf by pushing her 28cm wheel over so she can climb it and get out. Does anyone know the dimensions for making a lid?
How long should the wood be? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Ikea Detolf Lid
There are YouTube videos about this. Just search detolf hamster cage lid or something similar. You will get results.

Re: Ikea Detolf Lid
It would be easier if you used 2 smaller lids I am pretty sure the lids will need to be 21.5 cm x 81.5 cm but measure your detolf to be sure

Re: Ikea Detolf Lid
You definitely need a lid for a detolf! They can easily escape otherwise - all they have to do is push all the bedding into one corner like a mountain and climb up it!
It might seem a bit daunting but it's fairly easy I think - if you get your measurements and go to a diy store they will cut the wood to the lengths you required. Then you just need some mesh, which you can cut with scissors or wire cutters, a stapler, and either a few nails and a hammer, or those metal corner angled joining pieces that screw in (I think Erin uses those on her video).
However, check the measurements carefully - the internal dimensions of the detolf. I believe some people have said the measurements on Erin's video are incorrect - or it may just be that detolf's vary slightly on internal size.
Making two lids makes it easier to remove one than have to lift a whole big lid off.
So you need to measure the internal length between the two end pieces. Divide that measurement in two (for each lid), knock off a couple of millimetres so they two lids sit together and aren't two tight. Then you have the measurement for the length of each lid, to get the two (four) long pieces cut for the sides of each lid.
For the short end pieces - measure the internal width of the detilf between the two glass sides, again knock off a couple of mm so it doesn't fit too tight. From that measurement you then also need to deduct the width of the long pieces x 2. So for example if your long pieces of wood are x cm long and 10 cm wide then you you have 2 x 10cm widths to knock off the length of your end pieces. You will then need four end pieces that long.
If you go to a big store like B&Q they have cutting machines and can cut the lengths of wood exactly. So you'd choose one long piece of wood the right width (check it isn't warped) and take it to the cuttting area and ask them to cut all the pieces to your measurements.
Then all you need is the angled brackets, some screws, mesh and a fairly good stapler to staple the mesh to the wood frame.
Pine wood is quite soft (and fine to use) so the staples and screws should go in easily.
