Default Plasti-Kote - Is the spray safe?

Hello there!

I'm new to the forum, so I apologise in advance for any mistakes. Also, you can skip the next paragraph if you like, my question will be below it.

So I rehomed a dwarf hamster a couple of weeks ago from a friend as they had to get rid of her due to moving house. I haven't owned a hamster since I was a young child, so I've been trying to do plenty of research to try and make her life with me a happy one. This includes getting her a new cage, since she came to me in a small plastic one that just isn't fair for her to be in. She also only had a *very* thin layer of sawdust, a too-small wheel, a food dish and a water bottle. That's it. No hide, no chews or toys or anything. Straight away I got rid of the sawdust and replaced it with a deep layer of Carefresh that she likes to dig and sleep in, added a sandbath, chew and a toilet roll tube. Can't fit anything else in for now, but that'll change soon thankfully. I also have a Wodent Wheel waiting to be put into the new cage.

So a family friend is making a new wooden cage for me, and I've been trying to find something to coat the wood to make it waterproof. I've seen posts on here recommending Plasti-Kote, although mostly the paint on one. My question is: is the spray on kind also okay to use? I've tried searching but I'm getting mixed results, with some saying not to use it, and others saying it's fine.

What's the general verdict? The price seems better for the spray with how much you get, although I will pay for the tub if needbe of course, it's pretty much just in case we can't find the paint tub in the shop here. The quicker I can get the stuff and get her into a new home, the better

Thank you!

I would stick with the water based enamel that you paint on, I'm not totally sure about the spray & haven't seen anything conclusive to say it's safe.
There are two kinds of paint on Plastikote so you do need to make sure it says water based then you know you have the right one.
The pots of paint do look very small but even one will cover quite a good area, for a whole cage you would probably need a few though & you will need two coats.

What cypher said. I'm pretty sure the spray isn't water based. Some people have used Cuprinol garden shades for painting large areas which claims "believed to be safe once dry for use on wood which pets come into contact with and gnaw". Personally I would stick to the pain on plastikote, even if it takes a few pots - it's virtually odourless and the safest in my opinion. One small pot would probably cover a 50cm x 100cm area with one coat.

With hamsters it is more breathing toxic fumes or off-gassing as they have such a strong sense of scent. So not necessarily just about chewing. I have a strong sense of smell and find Plasti kote paint on enamel is virtually odour free.

The spray, at least here in the US, is unsafe. It is made for automotive purposes rather than sealing wood. I’m not quite sure if this is the same product; a picture or link would help! As mentioned above, sticking with a water/milk based paint is the safest course of action. Best wishes

The US one is a different product Drago, there is a craft spray paint here.

I used the spray a couple of years ago and didn't have any issues with it making my hammy sick, however, I did find that the coverage was nowhere near as good as the brush on stuff so I only use that now

Ah didn’t know that I really wish we had it here. We have to pay an arm and a leg to get it shipped!
