Post Platfor For Detolf

Hey guys so I'm planing on getting a IKEA detolf for my Syrian ham Peanut.
I have an idea to make a lid following Erin's animals step by step video on YouTube..
Then I plan to make a wooden platform and some how attach it to the detolf via the wires/poles that hold it together.. do you think this can b done and would it work? Can I make it so the platform can be taken out ?
I would love to put toys on the top platform and other toys and stuff..
the platform would not cover the whole width of the
detolf... I plan to make itlike the Alexander hamster cages top platform but to make it fit the detolf and could I make it be taken in and out easily?
I need some ideas to make this happen
Thanks !!!

Sorry if I didn't explain it well..

I think a platform that sits on the base might be better than one that attaches to the poles You would just need a piece of untreated kiln dried pine wood and some square wood dowels for legs. A diy shop could cut a piece of wood exactly the size you want. A platform is a great idea.

I would make it about 21cm tall so you have lots of room for substrate under it.

Some people make them out of Ikea knuff magazine racks too and stick little dowel fences round. If it's for a syrian the holes need blocking off on the side of the knuff.

What do you mean on the base? I wanted to have a ramp up to the platform so Peanut can walk up there and play..
I wanted to attach the platform and let it sit up above ( like half way up from the bottom of the detolf )

I also would recommend having your shelf sitting on the base to instead of attaching to the bars as in the Detolf the bars are vertical and the shelf might not securely attach to them and possibly slide down with the weight of toys etc.
Having the shelf standing on the floor the shelf will be more stable but this doesn’t mean the shelf can’t be to the height you want - as you would fix wooden dowels to the shelf and they will be the legs to the shelf and you would also be able to have a ramp leading up to.

I use a Knuff shelf in my DIY cage which stands on the bae of the cage. But with the legs the shelf stands half way up the cage and I use a bendy bridge from Pumpkin’s house roof to the shelf. Here is a link to a post in my hamster’s thread were I have posted pictures of my shelf - http://www.hamstercentral.com/commun...5-post162.html.

Well I was thinking of attaching something to the poles so it can hold it up... what are the exact dementions on the detolf on its back?

Or maybe i would make a huge " hammock " and connect it to the lid but of course it would be made out of wood... not sure what I'm gonna do yet..
Do you know any stores that would cut wood for me in the us?

I don't know about the US sorry In the Uk most big diy stores that sell wood, have a cutting section - you just give them the dimensions and they cut it to size on a machine. Would recommend getting some sanding paper too! To smooth any edges.

I can't imagine how a platform would attach to the detolf bars easily. A wood hammock/platform hanging from the top could also be heavy and pull the mesh down.

Is there a particular reason you aren't keen on a platform that has legs? As to making a ramp, some people just use a piece of wood and stick popsicle sticks onto it to make something to grip on when walking up. Or a bendy bridge, as SKB has done.

Another option for a platform is to use a flat roofed house - then your hammy gets the bonus of a nice big house with space for a big nest, hoards and a litter tray inside, plus a platform (the flat roof). This is what I did with one a while back. The last picture isn't the same house, but same idea. The bendy bridge makes a tunnel over the entrance door and also makes a ramp to the roof/platform. The house sits higher up on legs so makes it high enough for a platform and also lets the hammy tunnel underneath it The legs are just beech dowels glued on with petsafe glue.

Elmer's school glue is pet safe. Knuff shelves might be easier - no legs required
