Default Question : is Lego safe for hamsters?

I have LOTS of Lego that my grandson plays with when he comes to stay for the summer.
If it's safe, I'm sure he wouldn't miss a 'few' pieces.

I'm sure it would be fine for the occasional supervised photoshoot, but I wouldn't let them have it full-time in the cage or in a playpen. I would worry about them chewing the plastic, getting their claws caught in any gaps and walking on the bumpy surface because they can develop bumblefoot from uneven surfaces. There are many safer alternatives like the Puzzle Playground, if you have a dwarf hamster and patience.

Individual pieces could be pouched as well. I wondered about it too at one point, but decided to stick to hamster-safe things Although we did let our hamster play in the Octopod during dry bathtub taming!

And we did use some children's toys but just for photos really and they need checking carefully (I had to block off the floor area of the army truck on this video as it was open with bits of metal tubing and small gaps underneath).

I did have a megalomaniac plan at one time of a large glass tank with 30cm of substrate and the Octopod partly submerged in it But found hamsters are more interested in cosy round hidey places and tunnels.

Thanks - it was just a thought. I was thinking of the flat bases to be used as a ramp, perhaps. I thought the bumps might give a bit more traction going up & coming down.

If you can get a large ramp that doesn't come apart, I'd say it would be okay to use as long as you closely supervise your ham with it. Remember that plastic isn't the best thing to have in ham cages so it will need to be removed if it is chewed at all

Honestly there are much better materials to make ramps from that would actually be safe to chew.Hamsters are prone to chewing just about anything in the cage,so anything that isn't chewproof(such as ceramic, terracotta,or stone to an extent)must be fully digestible and nontoxic.Plastic does not fall under that category, which in turn means that Legos definitely shouldn't be used!

It can be quite sharp if chewed. The Germans won't use anything plastic in their cages Except for wodent wheels which apparently are made of a special hamster safe plastic if chewed. A lot of hamster toys are plastic - but lego I think could be quite sharp or brittle if chewed. For ramps some people have stuck lolly sticks or dowels onto a ramp to give it some footholds for climbing.

I sometimes make hides etc out of the large duplo bricks and have them in my syrian's playpen that is far too big to pouch and hes not a chewer but I would always supervise anyway.
