Default Making a bin cage :)

Hi

I am new to this forum but not new to keeping hammies

I am making a bin cage for my next hamster. I am looking for any advice that people can give me in undertaking this task - I have a 133 Litre box to start off with - its just over a meter long and just under half meter wide and about half meter tall - I also have a second box which we used as a secondary box for our previous hammie that is 40 Liter box.

I want to add mesh onto my bin cage as well as tubes and a couple of doors just wondering about best tools to get (i have some already from having looked online for things regarding bin cages)

Any advice would be appreciated our last hammie had two cages attached via tubes and it was a fairly good set up. but I wanted to go the bin cage route for any future hammies as we can add onto it and customise it as we want it and its cheaper than buying a cage of similar sizes

Thanks in advance

Hello and welcome to hamster central.
You might find this thread useful when building your bin cage - Photo Guide to Making a Bin Cage this is the thread I read through before making a bin cage (which is used a play bin or travel cage). I didn't use many tools apart from a jigsaw to cut the lid and windows, which wasn't the easiest thing to do (but I've also seen people heating up craft knifes to cut through the plastic) and a drill to drill holes to attach mesh.
Bin cages do provide plenty of space for a hamster and fully customisable to your exact requirements.

Welcome aboard! I hope you'll enjoy your time here. Bin cages are ridiculously simple to make and what tools you use to build it are very flexible, essentially, whatever you have available at your disposal that can cut plastic without cracking it, will work. I recommend galvanized steel mesh that you can get at hardwear/home stores. Galvanized steel is tough and rust resistant so it makes it perfect for mouthy little hamsters! Bin cages are so excellent due to what you pointed out, they're so customizable which makes them good to add to whenever you want to upgrade. Enjoy customizing your bin cage and enjoy the forum!
