People around here use Plastikote https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/Painting-...rds=plastikote

But if you're not from the UK maybe it will be hard to get. If so, I would recommend you to get a water based varnish (because that is what plastikote is) and it would be ideal if the water based varnish has a "pet safe" label (wich platikote doesn't have, but it's safe anyway)

If you have a B @ M bargains nearby. They sell Plastikote in the diy section. Other diy shops may also sell it.

If you use plastikote do make sure it's the water based enamel, not the other one, it will say on the label.

I used cuprinol garden shades paint on mine and on the shelves and houses. Much cheaper. Does a great job. Eta that it is paint not varnish but still supposed to be water proof.

You could also get milk paint and the milk paint seal finish product from Hobbycraft! It's a casein(milk protein)based paint,at least the one they sell, which is safe

I'm trying plastikote right now but I've done three coats and it's not doing anything! Just soaking into the wood! I'm doing the knuff ikea platform thing
