Default Wood and mesh lid for a tank?

Hi

My mum and I are going to a small hamster rescue tomorrow to pick up a 3ft glass tank as an upgrade from her hamster's P@H Large Wire Cage and we'll need to make a lid for it.

Does anyone know anywhere, preferably in Maidstone, where I can get the wood, mesh, something to attach the wood planks together and something to attach the mesh to the wood? Both of us are hopeless at DIY

Not sure on exact stores as I'm from the US,but you should be able to find a staple gun very easily in some sort of store that sells crafting supplies and that is the easiest way to attach mesh to wood

You should be able to find the wood at one of three places I think.A craft store,a DIY or hardware store,as well as a lumber store!Just make sure you know exactly what kind of wood it is and that it is kiln dried, pine should be the easiest to find as well for that You'll probably find the mesh at a hardware store as well though,so maybe go to a hardware store right away.

Thanks Amityvillehams! Will make a trip to B&Q (pretty much the UK equivalent of Home Depot ) and see if they do custom cut wood there

Thank you! We hope we can move the ham into it as soon as possible as he isn't happy on his current cage

If you can get wire with small holes it makes it harder for the hamster the bar chew. Wire staples will fix the wire to the wood. They just need hammering in. Fiddly but not that hard.

Have a look at you tube for how to make a lid for a detolf cage by Erin's animals. Your lid will be different size/dimensions though so measure carefully.

You should be able to get your wood, mesh and the other supplies you need from B&Q. I've recently bought pine wood from B&Q and all their products are really good value for money. The pine wood is normally in a section of their own called pine strip wood, so you will able to select the width and diameter of wood you want and it will need to be cut to the length you desire, which B&Q also do custom cut wood, so they should be able to cut the wood to the length you want, so it best to know all the dimensions before going.
Tutorial on how to make tank lids can be found on YouTube, they look fairly simple and this will help you to see what supplies you will need also but also give you something to follow along to while making you lid.
It's nice that your mum's hamster is getting a larger cage.

That's a shame that you will have to wait to Tuesday to get the tank, at least it's not that long away and gives you some time to plan how to make the lid. Hopefully everything will go OK on Tuesday so you can collect the tank.

Yes it is a shame that I have to wait until Tuesday, maybe it's for the best though as I'll need quite some time time to figure out this lid LOL
