4mm is really thin, I'd at least go 10mm(1cm). I thought you meant you wanted to build a cage just from plexiglass, it'll be cheaper with using wood though

I agree with the "can't get to the edge" comment. I think 4mm is fine because that's way thicker and sturdier than the existing plastic container in Flowerfairy's picture. I also use 4mm thick for the front of my DIY cage (my robo hamster is a bit smaller than the Syrian though ).

I just suggest 10mm because it would take the hamster longer to chew through if it decided it was going to, so you'd be able to notice before an escape. It also depends how much of a chewer your hamster is, and if the edges will be accessible. Same goes for the wood really

I will make sure that the edges of the wood are not accessable. I will also make sure that wonderful Arun has a load of things to chew!

I do have some thicker ply, not sure how thick so will try to use as much of that as poss. I do like the idea of having a good bit of mesh for ventilation.

The current bin is tiny but he does get play box time most evenings.

Come to think of it, the 10mm suggestion might be a better choice considering such a large cage, 200cm. The thinner 4mm may make the front wall too flexible in case you have to move it around (you probably could compensate that with stronger surrounding frame). 10mm plexiglass is really expensive though and the typical local hardware store may not carry it. There are also other thickness you may want to consider, ex. 6.35mm or .25 inch, that is not quite costly.
