Default Making DIY Cage!

Hi Guys!
So finally I am starting to get somewhere with starting my DIY cage for Percy (the bar chewer) It is going to be 100x60 or 100x75 (I'm not sure yet but hopefully the bigger one) And will be made with oak veneer wood from ikea. The front will be plexi-glass and the lid. Ventilation will be multiple small hole all along the top of the wood sides. Would this be enough? I would probably have the glass top off when I'm in the room? I will hopefully be done by next week! Whoop Whoop (btw when I say 'I' I mean my dad lol)

I'd say no glass top at all. It's just as easy and actually should be considerably cheaper to make a mesh lid which provides constant ventilation and the benefit for you is you don't have to constantly lift off a heavy lid!

I agree, a mesh lid would be better. I'm so excited to see the finished product!

I love building DIY enclosures! You mentioned IKEA & I wanted to ask, are you using a specific piece of furniture for this DIY or just pieces from IKEA?

Hi guys!
So the cage is finished yay! It ended up being 100x60cm with a plexi-glass front and ikea wardrobe shelves used as the base and walls. It is open toped as it is 60cm tall! The cage turned out costing a lot more than I had planned... About 130 euros! But it is worth it! I will post pictures later when he is a bit more settled.

Yes looking forward to seeing it! I think I'd still make a mesh lid - shouldn't be difficult after the degree of diy you've done so far. An advantage of having 60cm of height is you could easily have 30cm of substrate. But even with 15 to 20cm substrate, a determined hammy could get out!

I will post pictures tomorrow when there is some light and I have the will to move lol. I will go to the diy shop and get some mesh within the month and make a lid. I didn't have enough bedding to fill the cage with the amount I wanted so I settled for 4 inches on half and 7 inches on the other, but he hasn't taken any notice. He is settling in well thank god and love the extra space. Worth every penny.
