Re: My first hamster's DIY cage
The lowest draw could be filled really deep as a burrowing area once the ventilation has been added. You could ad tubes on the outside to get from one level to another, from the back of one level to the front of the next level.
Add extra chutes, hamster toys, different types of chews and a sand bath/toilet in the corner the hamster chooses to use.

Thanks! Those are good ideas. I did intend to full the lowest drawer with bedding for burrowing! He also has free tubes down there and some paper for shredding and building a nest. I wanted that to be his private drawer that I would try to leave alone as much as possible.

Re: My first hamster's DIY cage
I tend to only use stainless for the various places I have used nuts and bolts to hold stuff on, most other fasteners have zinc in which is not good in large quantities. As hamsters nibble on things a lot and their systems are small and simple I think they deal with toxins poorly and I wouldn't want to risk it. I just bought some rodent proof stainless mesh from eBay in the UK for my new cage and that was pretty cheap for a 1m x 5m roll.

Yea I really think I'd rather be safe than sorry and wait until I find stainless steel. For both the hamster and my birds sake.

Re: My first hamster's DIY cage
I never could find any stainless steel mesh that I could afford.... I finally gave up.. But either way here is my DIY cage completely finished. I wish I had put the vents on the side I don't like how it turned out.
